Spacek edges Kuyoth for exciting Mod
win at MHR!
By Janis Weigel
July 2, 1999; Unity, WI. - Friday night Mid-Season Championship races were sponsored by Budweiser. Top five finishers in each class were awarded with trophies. Another big weekend is in store at MHR this weekend with Friday night regular races on July 9th, sponsored by Pepsi. Then on Sunday, July 11th, the IRA Winged Sprints will be back to put on another great show, running with the WISSOTA Modifieds and Super Stocks. Sundays show will be sponsored by WIGM-K99.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks at MHR once again ran a great twenty lap feature, with only one caution held due to debris on the track. Leading the pack was last weeks feature winner and points leader, Paul Lieders. Lance Leu in second had early pressure by his brother Lonnie, who eventually passed him six laps later. Randy Spacek and Scott Johnson running third and fourth, both positioned themselves ahead of Lance in the eighth lap. Lieders, who also won his heat race looked strong moving through lap traffic, holding a good distance ahead of Leu to take the Mid-Season Championship Feature win. Lonnie Leu was 2nd, Spacek took 3rd, Johnson 4th and Lance Leu 5th.
Bunched up tight, coming through comer three on the first lap of the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, resulted in cars being pushed around with Steven Zurek getting slammed into the wall hard. Stopping the racing action, Zurek was checked out by the ambulance crew and was reported to be shook up, but not hurt. His car didn't fare as well, looking badly damaged.
With the restart, MHR points leader and National points leader, Kevin Adams held the front spot with Kevm Bogdanovic and Todd Lindner in tow. Ivan Simmerman and Ken Heser brought out the yellow flag, getting tangled up with each other in the sixth lap. Although Adams held the lead, Bogdanovic and Lindner refused to give him any breathing room throughout the race. As the white flag flew all three were bumper to bumper. Adams gained momentum on the last lap to take the Mid-Season Championship Feature win, Bogdanovic held off a hard charging Lindner for 2nd, Lindner finished 3rd, Dave Teatz 4th and Rod Herman 5th.
Bringing an end to the evenings races, the WISSOTA Modifieds brought out twenty-four cars in their feature lineup. Always seeming to charge the fans up with fast paced, hard driving action, this Mid-Season finale held an extra volt of electricity in the air.
Out in front, point leader Troy Kuyoth had his hands full, holding off a determined full throttle Jeff Spacek throughout the whole show. Proving to be a great race, the leaders were running into lapped traffic already by the eighth lap. A caution flew in the sixteenth lap, tightening up the pack.
Kuyoth, still out in from raced past the white flag. With the checkered flag out, Spacek went high charging side by side next to Kuyoth in comer three, taking a heart pounding, half car length lead as they flew past the checkered flag. Mid Season Champion Jeff Spacek, Kuyoth 2nd, running a strong third throughout the race was Luke Schilling, Steve Isenberg 4th and edging past Butch Oertel in the last lap for fifth was Brad Seehafer.
