By Janis Weigel

August 20, 1999; Unity, WI. - After Wednesday nights disappointing rain out of the Late Model Special. Friday nights warm, sunny weather was a welcome sight for racers, and spectators hungry for some racing action at MHR. The final night of track points was sponsored by Baxter Engines of Eau Claire. This Friday nights Season Championship races will be sponsored by Budweiser.

The Late Model Challenge Series Special has been rescheduled for Monday August 30th, 1999 Same place, same time - weather permitting.

With a front row start in the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature, Mike Bauer took a sizable lead, followed by Terry Gorst, Greg Krause, Paul Erikson and Mark Stender. Cars getting tangled up in the third lap, brought out the caution and tightened up the pack for a single file restart.

Fan favorite #3s Dale Sonnentag ( The Duck ) who had won his first feature earlier this season, returned to MHR after a two week treatment at Bethezda, Maryland battling cancer. He was making his way through traffic after a fourth row start. Looking strong, using the high side, Sonnentag blasted past Bauer to take the lead. Superstition about the number thirteen being bad luck proved itself as the lap would be the cause of three different cautions.

Getting loose in the dirt Greg Krause spun his #8 car. At the restart, Paul Lieders drifted up high in comer two, throwing sparks as his #57 car careened sideways, making contact with the wall. Heavy damage to his car would force him to end his night of racing action, but with a great season under his belt he had accumulated enough points to be the 99' Super Stock Point Champion at MHR. Ron Weinberger got bunched up with Butch Kummer on the next restart for the final caution, in this lap.

After a sixth row start, Lonnie Leu had moved into third and began to put the heat on Bauer. Making contact after diving low in corner three, Bauer did not budge as Leu backed off,  Paul Erikson. Erikson edged his way past Leu, for third. With wide open space in front and back of him, Sonnentag sailed past the white flag. Erikson drove hard into comer two, making contact with Bauer, spinning him out as they were making their way around for the checkered. Running a great race, Sonnentag grabbed his second feature win, Bauer was awarded with second, Leu third, Stender fourth and Larry Jackson fifth.

The WISSOTA Street Stock Feature was slowed down fit the first lap when a tire came off the #8 car, resulting in an early departure of racing action for Todd Heier. With pole position Mike Paul of Medford led the field, followed by Karles Knopps, Rod Herman and Dan Brost. With a fourth row start, Kevin Adams began his weekly, climb up through the pack.

Looking and sounding strong, Paul distanced himself from the rest of the racers with a comfortable lead. Adams moved, into third behind Knopps in lap seven. Racing side by side Adams used the outside lane, passing Knopps as they came across the line. Kevin Bogdanovic moved past Knopps the next lap around and put some heat on Adams until a strong surge of power by the #40 car would set him back. With five laps remaining, Paul never let up on the gas from start to finish to take his first feature win at MHR this season, Adams took second and with eleven feature wins this year and taking the 99' Street Stock Point Championship at MHR. Knopps took third, Steven Surprenant. 4th and Bogdanovic fifth.

With twenty-eight Modifieds a B-Feature was held with a ten car field fighting for a spot in the, A-Feature. Gary Baxter driving the #34 Daniel Larson Jr. car took the B win, followed by Steve Isenberg, Mark Baxter and Ken Pankratz to fill in the four remaining spots in the A-feature.

The WISSOTA Modified Feature was led by Jerry Weigel, followed by Butch Oertel, Jed Moore, Scott Duval and Troy Kuyoth. Moore moved into second with Kuyoth in hot pursuit of holding the National Points lead, charging hard behind. Holding the ninth spot, #22 left Spacek fell victim to a flat tire; bringing out the yellow and a quick tire change, to tag onto the back. At the restart Kuyoth followed Weigels #7w car bumper to bumper, using the low inside groove getting past Weigel who drifted high, giving Moore room to move into second.

Scott Duval would need to take a trip to the pits after hitting the wall in the tenth lap, breaking the center of his tire rim. A fast fix allowed him to get his car back on the track for the restart. Kuyoth used the restart to his advantage, moving out front for a huge lead. Making his first trip to MHR this season, Tom Steuding made his way through traffic, moving into third by the fifteenth lap, and edging out Moore. for second in lap eighteen. Troy Kuyoth, who won the 98' Modified Track Point Championship at MHR, sailed past the checkered flag for the feature win and a sizable lead in points to also take the 99' Modified Track Point Championship. Steuding was second, Moore 3rd, Weigel 4th and Gary Baxter racing a solid race from the back of the field finished 5th.
