Season Championship night held at
MHR!
By Janis Weigel
August 27, 1999; Unity, WI. - A large crowd was on hand
for the 1999 Season Championship Races held on Friday at MHR, sponsored by S&S
Distributing. The top five finishers were awarded with trophies after each feature race. A
full week is in store as the Late Models will return on Monday after the the Aug 18
rainout. Full shows on next Friday and Saturday will be held to end a great 1999
Season at MHR.
With pole position in the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature, Paul Lieders held the lead,
followed by Lonnie Leu, Lance Leu, Randy Spacek and Paul Erikson. Two different cautions
were called in the second lap. With a single file restart, Randy Spacek drifted high
in the front straight away, brushing up against the wall, throwing sparks. Spacek
continued for three more laps before calling it a night,
heading for the pits.
After a fifth row start, Terry Gorst had positioned himself behind Erikson for fifth. Getting loose in lap twelve, Lonnie Leu drifted into the infield, and charged back onto the track to continue eight spots down from his original position. Larry Jackson and Mark Krause, (driving Scott Johnsons #8 car) were putting on an impressive showing after both had started side by side in the back row. Jackson made his way through traffic moving into the fifth spot in lap thirteen, with Krause claiming the seventh position in the same lap.
Lieders continued to hold a strong lead, with Erikson running in second.
With two laps left, a disappointed Erikson was forced to pull off the track with a
broken radiator. Taking the Season Championship win was Lieders, Lance Leu 2nd,
Terry Gorst 3rd, Jackson 4th and Krause in fifth.
Eighteen cars lined up for the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature and eighteen cars would
finish. With only a couple cautions called due to spinouts, a well run fifteen lap
race was held. Holding the lead, Kevin Adams was followed by Kevin Bogdanovic, Rod
Herman, Todd Lindner and Dave Teatz. Steve Surprenant moved past Teatz in the second
lap, and Lindner edged past Herman in the fifth.
Familiar with a strong lead in the past races, Adams was challenged by
Bogdanovic and Lindner throughout the race. Racing bumper to bumper, lap after lap,
charging up the crowd. In the ninth lap, the three leaders were using the wide
track, going side by side coming into corner three, with
Adams outpowering the others to regain the lead, putting a small distance between.
With the white flag out, Bogdanovic and Lindner closed in once again in hot
pursuit, for a thrilling end as Adams would take the Season Championship win by a narrow
margin, Bogdanovic 2nd, Lindner 3rd, Surprenant 4th and Herman in fifth. Lindner was
later disqualified with an illegal spacer plate, moving the field up with Surprenant in
3rd, Herman 4th and Teatz in fifth.
Troy Kuyoth took the fast lead in the WISSOTA Modified Feature, following were Jeff
Spacek, Scott Duval, Luke Schilling and Jerry Weigel. Spacek and Duval put pressure
on Kuyoth right from the start of this race. Spacek positioned himself next to
Kuyoth for the lead in the second lap, when Duval found the perfect opening, nosing his
#17 car between the two to grab the lead. Spacek left Kuyoth behind and challenged
Duval hard for the lead.
A caution was held in the ninth lap on Brad Seehafer when he got tangled up with Butch Oertel and Jed Moore. All three continued the race after being pulled apart by Krug Towing Service. Duval held the lead with Spacek bearing down on him each lap around as the crowd held their breath and Duvals excited fans jumped and cheered each time he passed the flag stand.
A caution in the seventeenth lap, bunched up the pack for the restart, but a determined Duval was not phased as he held Spacek off for his first Feature win at MHR this season and the Season Championship win, Spacek 2nd, Kuyoth 3rd, Schilling 4th and Weigel fifth.
