MHR ends 1999 racing season with big
two-day special!
By Janis Weigel
September 3-4, 1999; Unity, WI. - . Racing action
on Friday and Saturday brought many different racers and a close to another great season
of racing action at MHR. After a long night
of caution filled races on Friday night, spectators were rewarded with well run, fast
paced
races on Saturday night.
Followed by Randy Spacek, Lonnie Leu and Paul Lieders, Rick Ellis led the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Friday night in their twenty-five lap Feature race for twenty-one laps before pulling into the pits, ending a good run and a sure win. Randy Spacek took over the front running spot. Racing hard behind Spacek in a heated battle, Paul Lieders and Lonnie Leu drove hard into corner two. Making contact, spinning each other out, Lieders was charged with the caution. Spacek held Leu off in the second position to take the win. Lance Leu 3rd, Mike Bauer moved up from a seventh row start to finish 4th and Tracy Larson in 5th.
Dale Sonnentag held the lead in Saturday nights WISSOTA Super Stock Feature race, with Randy Spacek, Ken Davis, Mickey Nosser and Lonnie Leu behind. Spacek moved past Sonnentag for the lead in the fourth lap. A caution in the eleventh lap, tightened up the cars for the restart. Running in the seventh position, Paul Lieders was moving up fast.
Sonnentag, who had been racing hard behind Spacek, began to fall back in
the fifteenth lap. Drifting high, as he came through corner four, Sonnentag hit the
front wall hard. With cars slowing and spinning behind, Dean Tautges trying hard to
avoid the congestion, unaware of Sonnentag, slammed into the back of his
stopped vehicle. Sonnentag faired much better than his crunched
up vehicle, ending a good run for the evening. At the restart, Lieders moved
into fourth behind
Lonnie Leu.
Terry Gorst, who was unable to start Friday nights Feature after
blowing up his motor in hot laps, looked strong after a Saturday morning motor
change, moving behind Lieders. Leu and Lieders brought on a little
"dejavu" as the two tangled with each other in the same exact corner as Friday
night, with the only difference being a big difference as Leu was called on the caution
with two laps remaining. Spacek would take the double feature win, Lieders 2nd,
Gorst 3rd, Davis 4th and Mark Stender fifth.
Friday nights WISSOTA Street Stock Feature was filled with eight different cautions.
Having a hard time getting started, #28 Jason Zdroiks lost a wheel from his car. At
the restart Kevin Adams was pushed into the back wall, Chris Oertel was charged with the
caution. Rudy Grbavcich held the lead, followed by Curt Myers, Fritz Scharf and Mike Cole.
With just five laps completed, four different cautions were called before ten laps were in the books. Kevin Adams moved his way up into the fourth position behind Scharf, followed by Todd Heier and Jay Kesan. Scharf dropped behind Kesan in lap thirteen, while Adams slowed down, drifting back to head into the pits with only four laps left.
A green, white, checkered race was held after another caution flew in lap
nineteen. Tightening up the front runners for the restart, Cole and Kesan edged past Myers
for second and third at the finish.
Myers settled for 4th. Racing at MHR for the first time, Rudy Grbavcich took the
feature win, leading from start to finish. Scott Lawrences first try at the track
finished in fifth.
Saturdays Street Stock WISSOTA Feature was a whole different race as the
drivers did an excellent job running with no cautions to finish in just six minutes.
Kevin Bogdanovic held the lead, with Mike Paul and Steve Surprenant behind.
Surprenant won the battle for second after seven laps of hard racing between him
and Paul. Bogdanovic would win this fast paced race, Surprenant 2nd, Paul 3rd, Mike
Cole 4th and Jay Kesan in fifth.
Friday nights Modified WISSOTA Feature brought out nine different cautions, before
bringing a close to an exhausting evening of racing action. A caution after only one
lap of completion led to mass confusion as everyone thought that they should be in a
different spot than they were placed. With cars coming across the line bunched up in
packs of four and five on a first lap start, it's really anybodys guess.
At the restart, Troy Kuyoth regained his lead with Rick Przybylski, Jerry Weigel and Tim Hintz in tow. Weigel moved into second at the restart of a fifth lap caution. Tom Steuding moved behind Weigel for third after a seventh lap caution restart. Cars tangling up in the back of the pack in the fourteenth lap brought out the yellow once again.
Steuding got a jump on Weigel at the restart for second. With two laps left a final caution was called. Steuding and Weigel closed in on Kuyoth, but were unable to pass as Kuyoth sailed by the checkered flag for the win, Steuding 2nd, Weigel 3rd, Przybylski 4th and Scott Duval in fifth.
Running a complete different style of racing action on Saturday night the Modified WISSOTA Feature was completed with only one caution in the thirteenth lap, slowing up the non-stop start to finish ending. Strong runner, Ron Schreiner led with a pole position start, followed by Tom Steuding, Luke Schilling, Scott Duval and Rick Przybylski.
Kuyoth was edged out of the sixth spot by Brad Seehafer in the sixth lap. Schreiner held a wide lead throughout the race, taking the feature win, with no changes behind as Steuding finished 2nd, Schilling 3rd, Duval 4th and Przybylski fifth.
Making their first appearance, the Six Cylinders put on a show to close
out the 99' Season
at MHR Saturday night. A twelve lap feature was held with #55 Ron Hmielowski taking
a strong
lead for the win. Rick Kilty with a last place start, moved up through traffic to
finish in 2nd, Pat
Beeksma in 3rd and James Maki 4th.
