Sippel best in MSA Sprints, Stanton tops Super at MHR!
By George Bauman & Janis Weigel

June 25, 2000; Unity, WI. - The Midwest Sprintcar Association took to the high banks of Monster Hall Raceway for the first time and Randy Sippel held on for a close A-Main victory over Kurt Davis.  With Sippel winning the main event the MSA kept alive their streak of no driver winning more than one A-Main so far this season.

After Ozzie Weisner paced the first few laps, Sippel charged from his eighth place starting spot to the front on lap three.  The Elkhart Lake, WI veteran then led every lap except one when Davis edged ahead only to see Sippel charge back less than a lap later.

The race saw Davis who started thirteenth and Leroy Ostrowski who started twelveth dice their way through cars to the the front of the pack but neither could handle Sippel.   The race stayed green until lap 21 when Jerry Ski spun in turn four. On the restart Lloyd Dykstra sailed into the turn three wall and flipped after a shock absorber had come loose on the rear of his car.  Dykstra was uninjured and the race stayed green the remaining laps.

The MHR became very fast prior to the A-Main pushing off and cars raced two and three wide many times.  David O’Neal finished fourth and Frank Firari fifth.

Bottoms up!  With the open wheeled Sprint Cars on hand, one would have expected that if a car would roll over it would be one of the winged cars.  However Super Stock driver Jim Willner (#77) hit the wall in turn four of his heat and toppled onto his roof.  He was unhurt in the incident. 62300e.jpg (16082 bytes)

The B-Main was loaded with fast cars who struggled in qualifying and missed the heat race transfers to the Main.  Kurt Davis moved to the point on the first lap and stayed ahead for 15 laps. Troy Wondra finished ahead of Andy Glewen, K.J. Skelton and Scott Uttech.  Also making the transfer were Jerry Ski, Jason Stefan and Jeff Becker.

Heat race winners were O’Neal, Rick Buslaff and Ostrowski.  In qualifying Ostrowski topped the field establishing a track record for the series of 14.09.

Jere Stanton (#55s) held his ground during the WISSOTA Super Stock feature and collected his first ever feature win here at MHR!

Jere Stanton held the lead in the 20 lap WISSOTA Super Stock feature, followed by Mike Bauer, Paul Erikson, Eric Bolosky and Mark Stender.  Paul Lieders moved past Stender for fifth in lap four, while Randy Spacek gained ground as he moved through traffic after a fifth row start to position himself behind Lieders.

A caution was held in the seventh lap after  Tony Bahr and Scott Johnson got tangled up in corner two.  Moving forward quickly, Spacek edged out Lieders for fifth in lap nine,  Bolosky for fourth in lap ten, Erikson for third in lap fourteen and Bauer for second in lap fifteen and set his sights on Stanton as he pulled in closely behind.   Lieders also continued to move forward, pulling ahead of Erikson for fourth in lap 18. A final caution with two laps remaining tightened up the pack for the restart and looked to be a thrilling end, when Spacek began to drift back after his car was struck with a broken A-frame, ending a great run for a possible win.  Holding the lead throughout the race, Stanton grabbed his first feature win at MHR, Bauer  2nd, Lieders 3rd, Erikson 4th and Rich Bishop in fifth.

With the lead, Kevin Adams dominated the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature as he gained a sizeable lead throughout the race, followed by Steve Zurek, Brent Mindock,  Steve Surprenant and
Chris Oertel.  The drivers put on a good show, as three-wide racing action  took place throughout most of the race. A caution was held after a couple of cars got hooked up with  each other, tightening up the race with three laps remaining.  After pressuring Zurek throughout the race, Mindock made a quick high move in corner four, for second with the white flag flying.  Adams
sailed by for the win, Mindock 2nd, Zurek 3rd, Surprenant 4th and Oertel in 5th.

Sad news: Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Dale Sonnentag who has passed away.
Dale " The Duck" was a fan favorite at Monster Hall Raceway in his #3s Super Stock.
