By Janis Weigel

August 26, 2000; Unity, WI. -Friday nights planned event was held and completed on Saturday night after rain showers forced a cancellation early in the evening. Great racing action was held in all classes.

82600b.jpg (15165 bytes) Steve Hallquist (#27) made his way to the winners circle on day one of the special Dale Sonnentag Memorial Invitational.  Hallquist avoided a major accident in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature and then had the speed to set the pace the remainder of the event to score the win.

Steve Hallquist led the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature on Saturday night with Lance Leu, Paul Lieders, Steve Thomas and Lonnie Leu battling for positions behind him. A pile up occurred in turn one after the completion of eight laps, which took out a number of drivers who were involved with major damage. Leaving the track were Larry Jackson, John Rafferty, Jim Willner, Eric Bolosky, Mark Stender, Paul Erikson, Mike Bauer, Scott Geiger, Troy Moritz, Rodney Olson and Randy Spacek. Spacek was able to make it back on the track for the restart.

A major pileup slowed the pace on lap eight of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature event.  Many cars were severely damaged in the crash but fortunately the drivers were all okay. 82600a.jpg (13183 bytes)

With the field trimmed down substantially, the remaining laps of the thirty lap event continued at a fast pace. Moving up into the fourth position, Lonnie Leu raced hard, passing Lieders for third in lap thirteen and began to put the heat on Lance. Diving low as they made their through each corner, Lance was able to hold his position until lap eighteen. A caution in lap twenty five tightened up the cars for the restart for a thrilling race to the finish, as Hallquist was forced to defend his lead against Leu's non stop pressure. Racing hard through corner four for the checkered flag, Hallquist held off Leu's hard dive underneath to take the start to finish feature win, Leu 2nd, Lance 3rd, Scott Duval 4th and Lieders in fifth.

With the lead position, Wayne Dean was followed by lay Kesan, Mike Prochnow, Kevin Adams and Ralph Stark in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Cautions in lap four, five and six slowed the pace and gave the advantage to Kevin Adams to slide into the lead, using the high groove. Kevin Bogdanovic moved through traffic quickly into third, after a sixth row starting position. Kesan left the track in lap twelve with mechanical problems. As Bogdanovic used the inside groove, passing Dean for second with six laps remaining, Bob Seidler moved into fourth. Adams, who had put a large amount of distance between himself and the rest of the pack, took the twenty lap feature win, Bogdanovic 2nd, Dean 3rd, Seidler 4th and Chris Oertel in fifth.

82600d.jpg (17311 bytes) Newly crowned MHR Raceway 2000 WISSOTA Modified champion Scott Duval (#17) scored a major victory this evening.   Duval took the lead just prior to the midway point of the race and paced the remaining distance for the victory.

Troy Kuyoth, Jerry Weigel, Scott Duval, Robby Bunkelman and Ron Mahder filled in the top positions in the thirty lap Modified feature. Duval took over second in lap two, but Weigel fought back to regain his position in lap four and pressured Kuyoth for the next two laps, to take over the lead in lap six. Losing momentum, Kuyoth slipped back into fourth as Duval moved into second and Bunkelman in third. Duval closed in underneath Weigel, taking over the lead as they passed the line with sixteen laps complete.

Tussle for the top spot!  Troy Kuyoth (#80) and Jerry Weigel (#7w) ran wheel to wheel for many laps in the WISSOTA Modified main event as they fought for the lead. Kuyoth eventually made the pass and finished second to Scott Duval. 82600e.jpg (15267 bytes)

A caution in the next lap, slowed down the fast paced race almost to a halt as it would take numerous attempts to get the race moving with three separate cautious held hi the restart lap. With Duval holding the lead, Kuyoth got a jump on Weigel, taking over second in lap eighteen. Butch Oertel moved past Mahder in lap 19 and edged out Bunkelman for fourth two laps later. Duval held off Kuyoth for the win, Kuyoth was 2nd, Weigel 3rd, Oertel 4th and Bunkelman in fifth.

The A-Mods held a fast paced, caution free fifteen lap feature event, as Scott Anderson took over Shane Halopka's early lead in lap four. Jeff Wilczek and Craig Lieders, who had moved into second and third battled throughout the race with Lieders getting past Wilczek for second with the white flag waving. Anderson took the win, Lieders 2nd, Wilczek 3rd, Halopka 4th and Luke Lobacz in fifth.
