Adams sweeps two divisions in
racing action at Monster Hall Raceway! August 10, 2001; Unity, WI. - Race action at the Monster Hall Raceway was highlighted by Cameron, Wisconsin's Kevin Adams on Friday. He swept two WISSOTA divisions by winning his heat race and feature in both the WISSOTA Street Stocks and WISSOTA Super Stocks on WDEZ 101.9 Radio night.
The Affordable Modifieds, or A-Mods as they are known, were the first to take to the raceway for their feature led by Scott Anderson and Mark May. The outlook for all but Anderson looked grim with the heavy hitter on the front row and at the drop of the green the inevitable happened. Anderson bolted from the front row and built a healthy lead early on while Mickey Nosser settled into second. May and Shane Halopka fought for third for two laps before May wrestled the position away and the field began to string out. Jim Poyda struggled through every corner due to the slick conditions while Nosser also got a bit loose and lost second to May momentarily. Nosser fought back and retook second but the leader was already nearly half a lap ahead. The field continued to run single file for the next few laps before Halopka lost the handle on his car, which brought out the first caution of the race and evaporated Anderson's huge lead. On the restart Nosser pressured Anderson and two laps into green flag racing Anderson slid up the track in turn two, allowing Nosser to dart by. Nosser dropped the hammer and put five car lengths between himself and Anderson while Rob Genett snuck by May for third. Nosser went on to claim the win over Anderson, Genett and May. The WISSOTA Super Stocks were led onto the raceway by defending track champion Paul Lieders and Jim Willner and much like the previous feature, the outcome looked predictable. Lieders grabbed the lead immediately while the Leu brothers, Lonnie and Lance, split Scott Geiger for fourth and fifth. Adams dove under Willner in turn two for second. In turn four Willner got crossed up and collected Geiger, which brought out the first yellow. Both cars were able to continue and a complete restart was called. On lap two Mike Hince fell victim to the slick condition in turn four and
stopped on the track facing the wrong direction. Even though Lieders did not stop on the raceway, he was charged with the caution and went to the tail for the restart. After the raceway was cleared, the damage was assessed. Willner's car had minor nose cone damage, as did Kevin Sonnentag's; however, Sonnentag's was pushed back a bit further, causing his fan to hit the shroud. Also damaged in the tangle was Lance Leu. His left rear tire appeared to be going flat but continued in the race. Back under green Adams had clear sailing in front of him while Randy Spacek dove inside Scott Johnson and Willner for second in turns one and two with Lonnie Leu on his tail to third. One lap later Sonnentag spun in turn three, causing Paul Erikson, Hince, Lieders and Terry Kroening to spin to avoid wrecking their cars. On the restart Lonnie Leu got a good run to the inside of Spacek on the front chute and raced wheel to wheel before securing the position on the back stretch. Two laps later Lance Leu's deflating left rear tire gave way, causing him to spin in turn four. The final restart lineup had Adams showing the way followed by Lonnie Leu, Spacek, Geiger and Bauer trailing. Adams and Leu remained about five lengths apart while they distanced themselves to nearly a straightaway over Spacek in third. The order remained the same at the checkered and Adams picked up the win over Leu, Spacek, Geiger and Bauer. After a breif delay while waiting for Adams to get out of the Super Stock and into the Street Stock, the next feature was set to go. Dave Teatz and Brent Mindock shared the front row and paced the field to the green. Ken Heser suffered mechanical problems on the first lap and stopped near the wall out of turn two. Ralph Stark spun in the same corner. On the restart Adams darted to fourth from seventh while John Becher did a 360 in turn two. On lap two Adams, Chris Oertel and Teatz went three wide in turn one and Adams was able to lock down second on the back chute. Adams chased Mindock down the back chute and on lap four he ducked inside Mindock and grabbed the lead, just four laps into the race. The field began to string out a bit with the exception of Teatz and Oertel, who were still in a heated battle for fourth. Adams went on to claim the win and chalked up another clean sweep in his quest for the WISSOTA Street Stock national championship. Mindock rode home second while Teatz was able to wrestle third away from Oertel. Rod Herman rounded out the top five finishers. The open wheeled WISSOTA Modified provided an exciting feature event with
numerous lead changes and daring passes. The top four were so tight, mere inches separted them from side to side and nose to tail. Three laps in to green flag racing, Moore marched to lead and left Spacek and Kuyoth to duke it out for second; however, a caution for John Heser, who looped his ride in turn four, sat spectators back in their seats. Back under green Spacek raced under Moore into turn one and snatched the lead away while Kuyoth followed for second. After five more laps of racing, the front runner began to encounter the slower back markers, which allowed Kuyoth to rocket around Spacek for the lead. However, the move was negated after Steve Scott spun in turn two, which brought out the yellow. Spacek was aligned as the leader followed by Kuyoth, Moore, Keyser and
Robby Bunkelman. On the restart Spacek went to the high side thinking that's where Kuyoth
was going to run, but Kuyoth dove to the inside and pulled alongside After the green flew for the restart Kuyoth switched lines in an attempt to throw Spacek off and ran wide open on the high sides of turns one and two to take the lead once again on the back chute. Spacek fought back and charged to the inside of Kuyoth in turns three and four and retook the lead, but the batttle fizzled once again when the yellow blinked for Oertel in turn two. With only a fistfull of laps completed, the race was sure to provide much more action and after the green flew over the raceway, Spacek jumped back to the high line and held the lead. Meanwhile, 13th starter Scott Duval had his car working well and appeared
in sixth after he passed Paul Knauf. While the leaders ran side by side, Spacek high and
Kuyoth low, Bunkelman, who was running fifth, suffered a flat right rear tire and One lap later, the confused lapped traffic nearly took out Keyser after
the leaders blew by them like they were standing still. They darted all over the track
rather than holding their line. Luke Schilling's turn one spin brought out the final
caution of the race just as the white flag was to come out. With a three lap dash to the
checkered, the crowd was on their feet and Moore, who was running third, got a great run down the back chute and, with mere inches to spare, he blasted between Kuyoth and the retaining wall going into turn three. He was able to keep his momentum through the corners and claimed second at the line behind Spacek. Kuyoth was third ahead of Keyser and Duval rounded out the top five. After the regularly scheduled races were completed, mechanics races were held in all divisions. These races gave one dedicated crew member the opportunity to jump behind the wheel and race the car they spend countless hours each week repairing and maintaining. In the Street Stocks Mike Warga drove Brent Mindock's #57 to the win. Brian Lieders drove Paul Lieders' Super Stock to the checkered and Paul Knauf's wrencher, Shawn Schultz, scored the Modifed win. Scott Genett motored Rob Genett's A-Mod to the win and Denny Jensen topped the Cruiser mechanics race.
