Randy Schloegl shocked the entire field of Late Models on Wednesday
at Monster Hall Raceway when the WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series rolled into town for
the second time this season.
Other winners included Jimmy Randall, who survived a last lap melee with Chris Oertel in
the WISSOTA Street Stocks, and Chisholm, Minnesota's Ryan Aho, who topped the WISSOTA
Super Stock feature after starting three rows deep.
Hometown hotshoe Troy Kuyoth took the lead from Brad Seng at the drop of the green flag
for the $2,000 to win WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series event and in no time had a huge
advantage over Seng, who was in a battle
with Randy Schloegl for second.
Schloegl wrestled second away from Seng early on and took off after Kuyoth, who was
setting a blistering pace out front. Duane Mahder, Tom Nesbitt and Joel Cryderman were all
running solidly and were engaged in a great battle with Seng for third.
Kuyoth began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 11, which allowed Schloegl to cut into his
advantage momentarily, but Kuyoth was amazing as he threaded through the traffic in front
of him.
While Schloegl was continuing to run down Kuyoth, Nesbitt had begun to pressure Seng for
third and was able to slip by on lap 22. Nesbitt's #1 began to smoke a bit and his run
came to an end soon after he assumed the third spot.
Seng retook the third spot and continued to battle with Mahder for position until the
first caution of the event flew on lap 27 for a crash in turn three. Just as the caution
blinked on, Kuyoth's #80 went up in a huge puff of smoke, ending what appeared to be a
sure feature win and halting an amazing performance on his home track.
Schloegl assumed the lead on the restart with Mahder and Seng continuing to duke it out
for second. Mahder was able to get by Seng into second on lap 31 and began to chase after
Schloegl, who was running very well out front.
The caution blinked on again on lap 34 for a spin, eliminating Schloegl's lead and putting
the series point leader, Mahder, right on his bumper for the six lap dash to the
checkered.
On the restart Mahder dove to the inside of Schloegl and pulled alongside the leader down
the front stretch, but Schloegl was not going to be denied his first career Late Model
feature win; he held off Mahder's challenge, shot back out front and raced to the
checkered and the win. Mahder crossed in second, adding to his point lead, while Seng
rounded out the top three finishers.
Pat Doar had a solid run in the feature, coming from his 24th starting spot to 10th at the
stripe to earn the Seubert Calf Ranches Hard Charger Award.
