Schilling strikes gold in Mod
action, Lieders best in Super Stocks! June 15, 2001; Unity, WI. - Two drivers appeared in the winner's circle for the first time of the 2001 race season while two other drivers continued to dominate their divisions at the Monster Hall Raceway on Friday.
In the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, a lap one chain reaction crash sent cars scrambling in turn one and resulted in an automatic restart. Those involved were Paul Lieders, Paul Erikson, Eric Bolosky and Dan Westaby. Duane Dunbar and Kevin Sonnentag paced the 20 car field to the green flag and when it waved, Dunbar bolted to the lead followed by second row starter Lieders and the two immediately began to pull away. On lap three Jim Willner spun in turn two and was drilled by Terry Gorst in the #17 machine. Both were able to continue but Gorst's machine had heavy front end damage. On the restart Lieders was able to make a move on Dunbar but it was negated due to a huge pile up on the front stretch. Pete Paulus got crossed up out of four and Ryan Linder piled head on into Paulus, causing severe damage to both machines. Paulus' machine went off on the hook while a flat bed was needed to remove the #17L machine of Lindner. Back under green, Lieders began to work the outside of Dunbar while Shawn Huse ducked inside of Lonnie Leu for seventh and Lance Leu dove to the inside of Randy Spacek to secure the fourth position. On lap six Lieders was able to wrestle the top spot from Dunbar and began to distance himself from the field, but one lap later the caution flew for debris in turn four and that bunched up the field once again. With the green waving again, Lieders took command while last week's feature winner, Lance Leu, drove around Sonnentag for third; he then blew by Dunbar for second and set his sights on Lieders. Leu got the break he needed when the yellow flew for Butch Kummer, who was stalled in the track exit. With one last dash to the finish, Lieders was able to hold off Leu for the win with Spacek third, Sonnentag fourth and Dunbar in the top five. The WISSOTA Street Stocks rolled onto the raceway for their feature next with Jason Kellner and Kevin Adams on the front row. Adams bolted to the lead when the green flag waved but a Dave Teatz spin in turn two brought out an early caution. The restart was a carbon copy of the original and Adams set sail, leaving the battle for second to Kellner and Brent Mindock. Mindock made the pass on Kellner but wasn't able to mount a serious challenge on Adams, even with the help of a late race caution and restart. Adams cruised to the win followed by Mindock, Kellner, Chris Oertel and Johnny Goulden. Open wheel action in the WISSOTA Modifieds included an intense battle for the lead between Luke Schilling, Jeff Spacek and Scott Duval. At the drop of the green Schilling shot to the lead from outside the front row, but he was not alone; polesitter Jeff Spacek was glued to his bumper and Scott Duval, who quickly disposed of Butch Oertel and Steve Isenberg, was in the mix as well. The three heavy hitters ran in a tight pack for a few laps before an early
caution flag waved and simmered the raging battle. When the green waved over the raceway again Schilling was in command with
Duval a very close second. Isenberg was third with Oertel fourth and Brad Knauf now
appeared in fifth. Just as the white flag was going to be waved, another caution flew for
the stalled car of Robby Bunkelman in turn four. That set up a green, white checkered
finish. On the final restart Duval got a great run on Schilling in turns one and two and
pulled alongside, but there was not enough racing room in three and four between Schilling
and the large tractor tires on the inside of the track, and Duval had to back down. The other open-wheeled warriors, the A-Mods, rolled onto the race track
for their feature next and, like in the Street Stock feature, the outcome was very
predictable. The luck of the draw put four time winner Scott Anderson on the pole Nosser was able to make an inside move on Genett work and overtook the second position, but by this time Anderson's lead was insurmountable. Anderson cruised to the checkered flag and picked up his fifth A-Mod feature win at the raceway followed by Nosser, Genett, Shane Halopka and Jim Poyda. The final feature event of the evening was for the exciting Cruiser division and Ira Strey and Brad Mews, along with the Virnig duo of John and Mark, paced the field. While the leaders picked up the gas to take the green flag, polesitters Strey and Mews had something go wrong with their #45 machine and they drove straight up the track towards the turn four wall, collecting the #6.2 car of the Virnigs, which brought out the first caution of the race. Strey and Mews were escorted off the raceway via the tow truck and the
field was realigned for the restart. Back under green the Virnigs shot to the lead
momentarily before another caution flew for a mix up in turn three, which resulted in
another attempt at a start. On the third attempt to get race action underway, Rodney Feltz made a bold move to the inside of two other cars that were racing door to door and made contact with the #544 machine of Jared Loos and Josh Olson, causing them to barrel roll in turn two and bringing out yet another yellow flag. The fourth attempt was the charm. Once under green flag racing, the Virnigs took command before Steve Bangart dove inside of them to take over the lead. Meanwhile, the massive #472 machine of Davis Clintsman was on the move. After starting shotgun on the field, he appeared in third and was applying heavy pressure to the Virnigs for second. Clintsman was able to wrestle second away from the Virnigs but he wasn't able to catch Bangart, who went on to take the win. The Virnig duo wound up third ahead of Scott Davis and the team of Joe Fitzgerald and Jamie Kilty. Darren Geiger rounded out the top five.
