Monster Hall Raceway Opens
Exicting 2002 Season!
By Ben Brost
May 3, 2002; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall Raceway's opening
night was a great kickoff to what should be a very exciting season filled with many great
nights of WISSOTA racing. All classes of cars put on a great show, with the WISSOTA
Midwest Modifieds and the WISSOTA Late Models joining the lineup.
The Midwest Mods were the first of the 6 feature races run on Friday
night. Included in the lineup were a few new faces, and many returning drivers, which made
for a great feature race. Six cars would start the night, 5 made it to the feature, with
#27 Scott Anderson taking home the checkers.
Next up on the high banks were the WISSOTA Street Stocks. From the drop of the green to
the wave of the checkers, the passion to win that each of the drivers had came through.
From early on until the very end the top 5 spots never stayed the same for more than a
lap.
The #36 of Dave Teatz and the #27 of John Becker battled side by side for
many laps, exchanging the first and second place spots, while the #51 of Chris Oertel and
the #17x of Joe Bablick battled for the third place spot. Both Bablick and Oertel
challenged the front runners for the lead spot, but to no avail as the #27 Jon Becker
piloted his car into the Budweiser Winner's Circle to celebrate his win.
The Super Stock race was a battle right out of the gate, with many talented drivers in the
field. The #27 of Mark Stender jumped out to a straight away lead, and held it there,
while the cars behind him jockeyed for position. The #57 of Paul Leiders and the #77W of
Jim Willner battled around each other for the chance to capitalize on their position, with
the #14L of Lance Leu waiting patiently in the 4th place spot for the majority of the
race.
Car trouble struck the Stender machine, which left Willner in the lead,
with Leu in a very close second. On the final lap of the race, Leu, in a daring move,
hugged his car tight to the inside of turns one and two. As Willner came out of corner
two, Leu was on his inside, as they both dove into turn three. Again, Leu hugged the
inside lane, and edged over Willner to claim his victory.
The Modifieds saw a lot of action, with great driving on the part of the drivers. The
biggest thrill of the night was when the #16 of Rob Genett rolling down the front chute,
and landing on his roof, but most importantly, walking away from the crash. After all was
said and done, the #80 of Troy Kuyoth took home the bragging rights of the first Modified
feature win of the season, with the #17D of Scott Duval coming in second, followed by #40
of Paul Knauf, #33 of Jed Moore, and the #3 of Mike Bauer rounding off the top five.
The debut of the Late Models was the highlight of the night, with 15 cars entering the
main event. With an element of excitement, each of the drivers picked their groove and
tried to pilot their machines into the Budweiser Winners Circle, and into the record books
to be the first ever Late Model feature winner at Monster Hall Raceway.
After winning his heat race, the #80 of Troy Kuyoth tried to make a run
for the lead, along with the #0 of Jim Rychtik, the #15 of Nick Anvelink and the #7K of
Tyler Keyser. After 15 laps of bumper to bumper action, the #15 of Nick Anvelink emerged
victorious, driving his way into the Budweiser Winners Circle, and into the history books.
