Monster Hall Raceway Ends Season
With Two Days of Action!!
By Ben Brost
September 6-7, 2002; Unity, WI. - It was a great finale
to a season filled with great bumper to bumper racing with a record 6 classes every Friday
night. A split show to end the year with a bang this past weekend included, the WISSOTA
Super Stocks, WISSOTA Late Models, and 2 Man Cruisers running Friday night, and the
WISSOTA Modifieds, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks, and 2 Man Cruisers
running Saturday night. Sponsors for the two day show were Zastrow Distributing, Wausau,
WI (Presented by K & A Promotions) and Revtech Industries, Park Falls, WI.
Friday night opened up with a battle in the WISSOTA Super
Stocks, with the feature being the first of 3 on the program card. It was #02 Jamie
Strebig and #27H "Hollywood" Steve Hallquist making up row number one. #21 Don
Drew and #40 Kevin Adams met up mid pack and ran inside and outside of each other all the
way up to the front of the field, only to meet up with Scott Duval battling it out with
the leaders. In a brilliant move out of corner 4, Duval swept onto the front stretch to
the high side taking the frontrunners spot, but he didn't hang onto it for long, as the
engine started to over heat taking him off the track. "It wasn't my car, and I didn't
want to over work it," Duval said. In the end, in a four car battle for the lead,
between #21 Don Drew, #27 Steve Hallquist, #02 Jamie Strebig, and #22 Randy Spacek battled
4 wide at times, but in the end, it was "Hollywood" Steve Hallquist who came
through with the win.
The WISSOTA Late Models were next on the agenda with a ton of tough competitors in the
house, and showing the way for the pacesetting laps was #27 Jerry Redetzke, and #95 Keith
Foss. At the drop of the green, Foss jumped out to an early lead, putting his right rear
tire on the cushion through the corners, slingshoting him down the shoots. He was walking
away with it, when caution flew with 5 laps to go. At that time, it was #42 Terry Casey
who was on the move, after starting in 4th, falling back to 7th, and working his way back
up to second along the high line. The green dropped for a 5 lap shootout, as Casey began
to go to work on Foss. Casey, who ran the high line, got around Foss up top and took the
win, collecting his $2000 check in the winner's circle.
That rounded out the field for the night, and Saturday night brought a whole new host of
competitors in for the evening, with 4 classes on the schedule. The WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds blasted off first with Al Seehafer starting on the point, chasing after yet
another feature win. The hot gun in the field, #27 Scott Anderson, started in 5th, and
made his way up to second, and threw everything he had at his car, but Seehafer was too
much for Anderson. Caution came on the track, and the car to watch was #3JR Shane Halopka,
who came from 9th, was in the hunt for a top 3 finish, but when the checkers flew, it was
Seehafer coming through with the win.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks saw #00x Dan Gullickson on the point, with Rick Hanestad to the
outside. The race to watch was for the lead, with Gullickson on the low end, and Hanestad
on the high side, going door handle to door handle on the back stretch, as Hanestad found
the advantage on the high side, and proved to be too much for Gullickson, as Hanestad got
the win.
The main event on Saturday night, the WISSOTA Modifieds came out with national point
leader #91 Craig Thatcher on the outside point, and #94 Tim Isenberg to the inside.
Thatcher jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back. 3 cars were battling their
way up to the front, including #1 Paul Harelstad, #33 Jed Moore, and #17 Scott Duval, all
trying to catch up to the leader, Thatcher. Harelstad made his way up to second, with
Moore in 3rd, and Duval in 4th, with the race winding down. After Harelstad went too high
coming out of four, Moore, in an amazing move, dove down to the inside to get second
place, with Duval hot on his tail. Duval ran out of time to go to work on Moore, and Moore
ran out of time to work on Thatcher, who came though with the win, collecting $1225 at the
end of the night.
Everyone at Monster Hall Raceway would like to thank everyone who came out this year, and
look forward to seeing you all next season!
