Brust Best in Monster Hall Late
Model Action! Spacek Strikes Again in Mods!
By Ben Brost
May 31, 2002; Unity, WI. - The racing at Monster Hall
Raceway on Friday night was intense, with 3 wide battles all night long, making a great
show for the fans to enjoy.
The Midwest Modified feature kicked off the night with #3jr Shane
Halopka starting on the pole, and #4 Jim Poyda on the outside. Halopka jumped out to his
lead right away, holding off charges from both Poyda and #01 Al Seehafer, but Halopka
never looked back from the frontrunners spot, and taking home his first ever feature win
in storied fashion.
The street stocks put on a great show for the fans with #51 Chris Oertel vying once again
for position, and #36 Dave Teatz following up on Oertel's back bumper. An accident forced
Oertel to the back of the back after a caution, but that didn't stop him from going back
on a mission to the front. But, the story of the race was #33 Mike Paul, who capitalized
on the caution, lengthened his lead to an entire straightaway, lapping traffic, and
winning the feature with ease.
The super stocks also put on a great race, with a pair of 8's out front, with #8s Kevin
Sonnetag, and #8 Scott Johnson making up the front row. Sonnetag got the holeshot early
on, and stayed out there until lap 14, when he went into the infield, which left the lead
spot open to #22 Randy Spacek. #55j Robby Bunkelman was on a mission for his position,
starting about midpack and working his way up to the front, behind Spacek. Then, making up
a great race, Bunkelman challenged Spacek on the white flag lap, and out of corner 4,
gained enough bite to edge over Spacek by a nose to take home the checkers.
The modified feature was one filled with thrills and spills, with once again #22 Jeff
Spacek out front, with #80 Troy Kuyoth marching to the front. Transmission problems struck
the Kuyoth machine leaving Spacek alone to march to victory lane, but, many new faces
weren't about to let Spacek go ahead that easily. #33s Jeremy Shiltz took over the second
place spot after mechanical troubles struck the other leaders.
Shiltz had 3 laps left to try to make a run at the lead spot. He tried the
high side, and the low side, to no avail. Shiltz had the white flag lap left to try to
make something happen. Coming out of corner two, his front tires matched up with Spacek's
door, but couldn't do any more with his machine, as Spacek took home the win, with Shiltz
coming in a strong second.
The late models brought the noise onto the track with them, with Troy Kuyoth on the move
from the start, but #19 Paul Brust who was on the move from the start, passed Kuyoth with
ease, and taking his lead out to a straightaway. Kuyoth battled it out for second place
against #32 Terry Anvelink and #0 Jim Rychtik, and was able to hold onto his second place
spot. But, in the end, making his Monster Hall Raceway debut in great fashion, Brust took
home the late model crown for the night.
