Schlafer Scores in Sprints at
Monster Hall! June 16, 2002; Unity, WI. - It was yet another great night of racing at Monster Hall Raceway as the rain came, but not for long, allowing for 2 classes of Wissota racing action to combine with the main event, the Midwest Sprint Car Association Sprint Cars. Hellman Distributing presented by K & A Promotions brought the show out to the high banks for an excellent Sunday night special event.
The first of 3 features was the WISSOTA Street Stocks, with 15 in attendance, all lined up to do battle, and #5 Dan Brost leading the charge on the point, to the outside of him was #23 Mike Warga, completing row number one. The first caution came out on lap 4, which saw a melee of position jockeying, with the field now being led by #51 Chris Oertel, Warga in second, Brost in third, #36 Dave Teatz in fourth, and #71R Rod Herman rounding out the top 5. But, the car on the move was #33 Mike Paul, after starting in 10th, he had worked his way up to 6th by lap 4, and wasnt about to stop there. #36 Dave Teatz was also on the move, but mechanical trouble struck his machine, and he was forced to end his night early. Lap 7 still saw Oertel out front, with Warga right behind him, and on Wargas tail was Paul, after picking off 3 cars prior to moving to the inside of Warga in turn 3, allowing him to challenge for the lead. The stage was set for a battle between Paul and Oertel, with Oertel running the high side, and Paul putting his car on a rail sweeping the low groove. Oertel pitched his car hard going into turn two, looking for any sort of forward bite that he could find to shoot down the backstretch. Paul again swept through one and two, and got side by side with
Oertel down the backstretch, Oertel stuck his car in the high groove, and Paul put his car
in the low groove, and across the front stretch, it was Mike Paul who was the new leader,
and the winner for the feature race. We
could put the car anywhere on the track, and it would just go faster for us Paul
stated with a big smile before getting his picture taken in the winners circle. Next on the
High Banks were the Midwest Sprint Car
Association Sprint Cars, and Danny Schlafer was on a mission and succeeded by winning the
Midwest Sprint Car Association Feature Sunday, June 16th at Monster Hall Raceway. K.J. Skelton continued his lead in the points
standings as Troy Hepfner moved up into second. With the drop
of the green, J.J. Stefan grabbed the early lead, with Skelton right behind. With four laps in the books, Skelton prevailed in
a wing to wing battle with Stefan to take the lead. A
lap six yellow had Skelton on the point, followed by Stefan and Danny Schlafer. With the
return to action, Skelton again opened up a six car lead while Danny Schlafer worked his
way past Stefan. Danny Schlafer quickly
closed the gap and with thirteen laps in, drove by Skelton.
Schlafer opened up a commanding lead while Al Schlafer, Jerry Ski and Troy
Hepfner were advancing through the field. After a lap 21
caution bunched up the field, Al Schlafer tried to make a run on Skelton, but in the end
it was Danny Schlafer taking the checkered flag, Skelton running second and Al Schlafer
finishing third. Danny Schlafer dedicated the
win to his father, Al Schlafer, as his Fathers' Day present. Ski finished in the fourth spot, Hepfner took fifth, Doug Schenck
moved up the take sixth and Lance Fassbender advanced from deep in the field to claim
seventh. Jermie Hedrick to KSE Hard Charger
honors advancing 12 spots with a hard run. Tim
Haddy and Frank Firari both advanced well to round out the top ten. The final event of the night was the WISSOTA Super Stocks, and showing the way was 77w
Jim Willner, and 17 Terry Gorst. The field
was brought up to green, then a caution happened in turn two, bringing the field to a
sudden stop. Once the cars were lined up
again, it was still Willner out front, with #97 Eric Bolosky in a close second, and 55j
Robby Bunkelman in third, 14L Lance Leu in fourth, and #24 Butch Kummer in fifth. #T40 Danny Thomas was on a mission for position as
he was moving quickly up the field, marching to the front.
Willner had his lead, but not for long, as Thomas took over the lead, with
Bunkelman still challenging for the frontrunners spot.
But in the end, winning his race in great fashion, #T40 Danny Thomas
received the checkers first. STREET STOCK: SUPER STOCK: |
