Special at Monster Hall!
By Rena Rogers and George Baumann
July 20, 2003; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall Raceway held
another Midwest Sprint Car night along with the Wissota Street Stock. The night was
sponsored by Hellman Distributors and Pep's Pizza presented by R&J Promotions.
The Wissota Street Stock were on the track first with Todd Heier and
Jim Marshall making up the front row. Heier held the lead as Steve Bangart closed in on
him. Within the next lap Bangart passed Heier for first.
Joe Bablick moved from the back all the way up to the first position
within the first five laps of the race. Roger Walker moved to the inside of Heier and
passed him, closing the gap between him and Bangart where Walker was able to pass him for
second. Bablick won this no caution event.
In MSA Sprint Car action, K.J. Skelton needed just 11laps to move from his
sixth place starting spot to the front. For Skelton it was his second A-Main win of the
season.
A lap two crash knocked T.J. Luedke and Troy Wondra out of the race after they collided
with Dean Erfurth. Erfurth's continued in his damaged car and managed a tenth place
finish. Skelton started his charge to the front early and was fourth by lap four and third
two laps later. He then worked his way around Danny Schlafer for second and set sail for
race leader Al Schlafer.
Then on lap eleven he passed Schlafer and was soon lapping cars. Series points leader and
fast qualifier Doug Schenck started 12th and slowly worked his way forward. At the race's
midway point he was seventh and ready to close in on the leaders.
Michael Emme who started fifth ran a steady race and moved into second place but couldn't
get close to Skelton. Schenck would finish third ahead of Al Schlafer and David O'Neal who
passed 11 cars to earn the KSE Hard Charger Award.
Danny Schlafer was running third until a tire went down sending him to the pits and then
the back of the pack. He would recover nicely and finish seventh.
Heat race winners were Al Schlafer, Keith Olejnik and Danny Schlafer. Schenck's fast
qualifying lap was a 14.212.
