Spacek Masters Mods at Monster
Hall Raceway! August 15, 2003; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall Raceway held its annual Mid-Season Championship races this Friday night in front of a hearty crowd of eager race fans. The starting orders for the feature races were determined by the seasons points standings with the points champions in each class lining up in the pole position.
At the conclusion of the racing program it was apparent that the fans had witnessed some of the best racing action of the season. Jeff Spacek was the man to beat in the Modifieds Friday night as he came away with another feature win. National Points leader Kevin Adams picked up the Super Stock win. Mike Paul used a last lap pass to pick up the Street Stock victory and in the Midwest Modifieds it was Shane Halopka who led all 15 laps on his way to victory lane. The first feature race of the evening belonged to the Wissota Midwest Modifieds. Season Champion Al Seehafer and Shane Halopka filled out the front row. The two were dead even coming out of turn two but Halopka ran his car hard into turn three and pulled into the lead. Seehafer was in second with Scott Anderson working the high groove putting heavy pressure on Seehafer for second. Halopka had built up a comfortable lead in the early laps of the race. On lap four Anderson got a run on Seehafer and made the pass for second. The man on the move was Ken Heser, as he worked his way under Duane Geboy on lap seven and then passed Jim Poyda on lap eight to pull into the fourth position. Halopka continued to lead after working through lap traffic on several occasions before the checkers waved and he picked up the win. Scott Anderson finished off a fine run in second place after challenging for the lead early in the race. Al Seehafer came away in third place after winning his second points championship at Monster Hall. Ken Heser has ran extremely well as of late and did so again tonight with a fourth place finish ahead of Jim Poyda in fifth. The Wissota Street Stocks were next to pull trackside and contest their feature race. Point Champion Rod Herman and runner-up Mike Paul paced the field to the green flag. Herman and Paul ran side by side the first lap with Paul going high and Herman sticking to the bottom. Herman pulled into the lead on lap two followed closely by Paul and Roger Walker. On lap four Paul made another challenge for the lead while Walker and Butch Kummer battled for the third spot with Walker getting a little better run out of the corners. A caution on lap six bunched up the field for the restart with Herman leading ahead of Paul, Walker, Kummer and John Gouldon. On lap eight Herman kept hi lead but had Paul, Walker, and Kummer right on his bumper until the caution flew again on lap 11 setting up a four lap dash to checkers. Herman continued to lead after the restart but was again pressured hard by Paul and Walker. Paul finally made the pass on Herman on turn four of the last lap and picked up the win. Herman came across the line second after leading 14 of the 15 laps. Roger Walker had another impressive run taking home his ninth consecutive top three finish at Monster Hall Raceway. Butch Kummer finished fourth after challenging the frontrunners for the entire race. Mike Warga made a late race charge passing several cars on his way to a strong fifth place finish. Next up were the Wissota Super Stocks with Kevin Buzzy Adams starting from the pole alongside Paul Erickson. Adams shot to the early lead just ahead of Erickson and a side by side battle for third between Randy Spacek and Lance Leu. Adams continued to lead through lap nine ahead of Erickson, Spacek, Leu, and Curt Meyers who charged through the field after starting in the fifth row. On lap 12 Adams ran into lap traffic but was able to work his way through and extend his lead over Erickson. The caution flew twice on lap 16 for a spin in turn two and then another in turn four. After the restart Adams pulled away to a six car length lead ahead of Erickson and a spectacular three wide battle for third with Meyers down low, Leu up high, and Spacek in the middle. Just as Adams was coming out of turn four for the checkers his car let go and rolled to a stop past the flagstand, but Adams had enough of a lead that he still picked up the win. Paul Erickson finished off a solid run in second ahead of Curt Meyers who came out ahead of the race for third at the line. Lance Leu worked the high groove for most of the race and it payed off with a fourth place finish ahead of Randy Spacek who, along with Leu and Meyers put on quite a show in the closing laps which kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Next up was the Main Event of the evening in the Wissota Modifieds. Season Points champion Luke Schilling and defending Point Champion Jeff Spacek starting from the front row. Schilling pulled to the lead in turns one and two but Spacek dove low coming out of turn two and took over the lead. On lap two Schilling tried a similar move on Spacek but dove a little too deep and got sideways in front of several cars bringing out the caution. For the restart it was Spacek in the lead ahead of Jed Moore and Dave Baxter. Spacek held his lead after the restart while Paul Knauf worked on Dave Baxter for third. Cautions on laps six, eight, and ten slowed the field down and prevented several cars from advancing through the field. Spacek retained his lead after the restart ahead of Moore, Knauf, Mike Bauer, and Rob Genett. A caution on lap 16 set up a sprint to finish between Spacek and Moore. Spacek got a good jump on the restart and never looked back as he grabbed the feature win in his last appearance at the track this season. Jed Moore had a solid run coming home fourth ahead of Paul Knauf. Mike Bauer ran hard all night and finished fourth ahead of Rob Genett. The final race of the evening was in the Two-Man Cruiser division. Gary Schubert/Rich Delis started from the pole alongside Gary Mann/Ken Clark. Schubert Delis took the early lead ahead of Olson/Loos and Lindner/Loos. Olson/Loos made the pass on the high side on Schubert/Delis on lap six to take the lead. A caution on lap seven slowed the field up for the restart but after several attempts at restarting the race the time limit had been reached giving Josh Olson/Jared Loos the win.
