Anvelink, Schilling Capture
Monster Hall Mains! May 2, 2003; Unity, WI. - On a clear but cool Friday night, Nick Anvelink dominated early, then held on late for the late model feature win at Monster Hall Raceway.
Todd Flannery was about to run away with the event from the
pole, but he went to the pit to replace a flat tire during an opening-lap caution. Ryan
Aho jumped ahead on the restart, but on lap 5 Anvelink made a sweeping move through the
backstraight and into turns 3 and 4 to advance from fourth to first. From there Anvelink
ran a smooth middle line and During the second half of the race, however, the young star had to survive several restarts that put Steve Isenberg on his rear bumper. Anvelink fought off Isenberg's challenges and took home the win. Aho took third, followed by Nick's dad Terry Anvelink and Luke Roffers. Luke Schilling led the modified main from start to finish, but he had to fend off young Canadian hotshoe Steve Arpin from the drop of the first green flag. As the two leaders battled and often pulled away from the field to finish one-two, Paul Knauf moved by Brad Seehafer early on and stayed there to finish third, and when Seehafer spun as the field took the white flag, Isenberg moved by Jeff Spacek to take fourth and relegate the defending points champ to fifth. Darin Meierotto took over the points lead in the super stocks with a clean sweep on the evening, and in dominant fashion. Meierotto moved around polesitter Paul Erickson at the start of the feature, while Randy Spacek followed him to second. Curt Myers moved into third after a midrace restart and threatened for more, but two late race restarts kept the field in line to the finish. Kevin Adams held a strong fourth in front of Jamie Strebig. A caution-riddled street stock feature started with David Pospyhalla's flip on the back chute on the opening lap. Two more attempts to start the event were negated by a spin and a get-together against the backstraight wall before Rod Herman assumed the point, ahead of Butch Kummer. But on a lap 9 restart Todd Lindner snookered his way inside the leaders and moved from fourth to first, and Lindner led the field to the checkered. Herman held on for second, while Joe Bablick's car gave out coming out of turn 4, allowing Jared Lindner to edged him for third at the stripe. Kummer held on for fifth. The Midwest modifieds also struggled to get the initial laps in, but longtime super stocker Duane Dunbar persisted and moved from outside the front row to the lead, then stayed there for his first-ever feature win in the division. Scott Anderson moved by Jim Poyda to take second but couldn't real in Dunbar, while Paul Niznik, Al Seehafer and Shane Halopka trailed at a distance. Of the 14 two-man cruiser teams that started their feature, only 6 survived the first laps, and Josh Olson and Jared Loos steamed away to the win. Dave Curtain and Shawn Sandley claimed a distant second, while Shawn Peterson and Adam Weis took third.
