Kaanta Captures WISSOTA Challenge
Event at Monster Hall! July 3, 2003; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall Raceway held the Late Model Challenge Series on a very nice night sponsored by Hellman's Distributing and Bill's Service Center presented by R&J Promotions. The Late Models were also joined by the Wissota Street Stocks and the Wissota Modifieds. The show got on the way by 7 p.m.
First on the track for there feature event were the Wissota Street Stocks. In the poll position was Roger Walker along with John Becker on the outside. On the start Ron Hanestad jumped into the lead and Walker fell back to fourth. The race got off to a bumpy start with Michael Stangl turning his car around in the back stretch on lap two and on lap three Brock Wright spun in turn four. As the race went on Hanestad gained a big lead with Rod Herman and
Dan Gullikson battling for second place. Further back in the pack Shaun Wehlage took the
seventh place from Todd Lindner. Wehlage, Walker, and Mike Paul went three wide with Paul
pulling ahead for fifth. The race then ended with Wehlage falling back to seventh and
Walker taking sixth. A caution came out on the track with Luke Schilling having no where to go and spinning around with Todd Siddons in turn two. Restart Harelstad speading pass Knauf for second as Harelstad goes up to battle with Baxter for the lead. During lap five Knauf and Baxter fight for second but when they reach turn four Knauf Spins around luckily not getting hit which caused a caution. Now Jeff Spacek reaches Baxter and stays close not letting off. Todd Blaeser joins Spacek and Jed Moore passing both of them for second. Harelstad is way ahead and Blaeser is not able to reach him in time to gain another position. The main event with the Wissota Late Models finally came on the track with Joel Cryderman in the poll position and Jon Kurshinshy beside him getting ready to race the 4o lap event. Cryderman gains the lead with Nick Anvelink right behind him. The
third position was taken by Duane Mahder. Mahder then shots to second. By lap ten Anvelink
has many car lengths between him and Mahder. He then began to lap the back of the pack. On
lap 19 Ralph Ashbrenner stalls in turn four causing the first caution to come out. The
restart John Kaanta jumps Mahder for second. Kaanta then goes to the outside of Anvelink
and gains first. Mahder spins in turn four causing a caution on lap 30. Kaanta then gains
a three car lead and is able to win the Challenge Series. Street Stock |
