July 2, 2004; Unity, WI. - Carquest Auto
Parts and K99 WIGM sponsored the racing program at Monster Hall Raceway this past Friday.
Chris Oertel had the field of WISSOTA Modifieds covered and led the entire twenty lap
distance. Other winners included Robby Bunkelman in the Super Stocks, Cory Crapser in the
Street Stocks and Dave Salzman Jr. in the Midwest Modifieds.
Salzman moved from the pole to take the early lead of the WISSOTA Midwest
Modified feature. Randy Bargender gave chase four car lengths behind in second while Shane
Halopka, Joe Bablick and Shannon Williams ran nose to tail for third. Salzman saw his lead
disappear when a three car pile up in turn two brought out the caution with five laps
complete. After the restart, Salzman again pulled to a two car length lead. Halopka worked
the bottom groove on Bargender and snuck under him to take over second with six laps
remaining. This allowed Bablick and Ken Heser to reel in Bargender and make it a three car
battle for third. Bablick got on the inside of Bargender on several occasions but
couldn't get enough bite to complete the pass.
Out front, Halopka was able to close up on the back of Salzman and put some heavy
pressure on as the laps wound down. Salzman however, was up for the challenge and held on
to take the win. Halopka came from deep in the field to finish second while Bargender held
on to his point lead with a third place finish. Bablick had another solid run in his
rookie season coming across the line in fourth ahead of Heser.
The front row for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature consisted of Cory Crapser and Brock
Wright. Cory Crapser used the preferred bottom groove to get out front and take the lead
ahead of Wright and a tight five car pack including Zack Kauth, Steve Bangart, Butch
Kummer, Wayne Dean and Roger Walker. A lap four caution stretched everyone out single file
behind race leader Cory Crapser. When the field took the green flag, Cory Crapser again
felt pressure from Wright who was tight on his back bumper. The man on the move was
Kummer, who made the pass on Kauth for third and began
to reel in the leaders. Dean and Chris Crapser battled each other for fourth as they
followed Kummer towards the front. Cory Crapser continued to hold the lead while Wright
tried several different lines trying to make the pass with only a few laps left. Crapser
was able to hold off the charge from Wright and pick up his second win of the season.
Kummer closed in on the leaders late in the race but didn't have enough laps to get out
front and finished third. Dean was able to make progress on the high side and used it to
beat out Chris Crapser for fourth at the line.
Jim Willner blasted from outside the front row to secure the lead in the WISSOTA Super
Stock feature. Polesitter, Robby Bunkelman stayed tight on the back bumper of Willner
waiting for the right opportunity to make the pass. Terry Kroening ran in third fending
off the charge of Scott Johnson while Chad Zastrow, Scott Geiger and Mark Stender traded
the fifth and sixth positions. After a lap five caution, Bunkelman shot to the high side
going for the lead but Willner was able
to hold the position while running lower on the track.
Meanwhile, Randy Spacek made his way from deep in the field to interject himself in the
battle for third between Kroening and Johnson. Out front, Bunkelman finally found an
opening to get by Willner and took over the lead shortly after the halfway point. Once he
got out front Bunkelman stretched his lead to five car lengths by the time he passed the
checkered flag.
Willner has been on a roll as of late and he showed no signs of slowing down with a
strong second place finish. Kroening came off of a Heat win earlier in the night to finish
third in the feature. Spacek climbed through the field to take home fourth ahead of
Zastrow.
John Frydrych and Chris Oertel led the field to the green flag for the WISSOTA Modified
20 lap Main Event. Oertel used the high line to lead the first lap and then dropped down
to the low groove once he secured the position. Scott Duval gave chase in second while
Frydrych, Luke Schilling, Paul Knauf and Jeff Spacek ran in a tight pack for third.
Schilling came out on top of that battle and immediately began reeling in Duval. Schilling
completed the pass on Duval for second just as the crossed flags came out marking the
halfway point in the race.
This allowed Spacek to close in on Duval while Kent Baxter and Dan Konrardy battled
over the fifth position. The caution flag flew on lap 12 and then again on lap 14 which
eliminated Oertel's lead and put Schilling, Spacek and Duval behind him for the restart.
When the green flag waved Schilling launched his car up to the high line and was able to
pull alongside Oertel and the two cars ran side by side up until the caution flew again on
lap 18. This time, Schilling was not able to find the same grip up high and was forced to
duck back in behind the leader. Oertel held on for the win in his first season
piloting a Modified. Spacek came across the line in third ahead of Duval. Kent Baxter made
a late race pass on Konrardy to get a top five finish.
The final race of the evening was in the Two-Man Cruiser Division. Bargender/Martin led
from the pole position while Ron/John Kunninger put some heavy pressure on from behind.
Meanwhile, Davis/Fitzgerald fought their way from the rear of the field to challenge
Ron/John Kunninger for second near the halfway mark. This allowed Bargender/Martin to
stretch
their lead to several car lengths and pick up the win after leading all but one lap.
Schmidt/Podratz battled their way from the fourth row to finish second ahead of
Schubert/Delis.
