July 9, 2004; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall
Raceway presented a full racing program this past Friday night sponsored by Pepsi Slush
Puppie and Stratford Sign.
Scott Duval came out on top of a 20 lap duel with Chris Oertel in
the WISSOTA Modifieds. Paul Erickson picked up the win in a caution filled WISSOTA
Super Stock feature. Other feature winners included Butch Kummer in the Street
Stocks and Shane Halopka in the Midwest Modifieds.Carquest Auto Parts and K99 WIGM
sponsored the racing program at Monster Hall Raceway this past Friday. Chris Oertel had
the field of WISSOTA Modifieds covered and led the entire twenty lap distance. Other
winners included Robby Bunkelman in the Super Stocks, Cory Crapser in the Street Stocks
and Dave Salzman Jr. in the Midwest Modifieds.
Jim Poyda blasted out front to take the early lead in the WISSOTA
Midwest Modified feature. Halopka, Joe Bablick and Dave Salzman were close behind
battling over the second spot. Halopka capitalized on a lap
six caution by jumping to the outside groove to take the lead from Poyda. This gave
the third place car of Bablick a chance to close in on the leaders. Halopka was
quickly able to stretch his lead out to four car lengths over a three car battle for third
between Poyda, Bablick and Randy Bargender. Bablick got a good run down low and
moved into the second position with four laps remaining. Halopka continued to run
smooth, fast laps and held on for the win. Bablick
wasn't able to gain enough ground on Halopka in the late going to challenge for the lead
and came across the line second. Poyda held off a late race charge from Bargender to
finish in third, while Salzman rounded out the top five.
Butch Kummer used the pole position to take the lead in the WISSOTA Street
Stock feature. Chris Crapser proved to have a strong car as well by passing several
cars to get to the runner-up spot four car lengths behind Kummer. Ralph Stark held
on to the third position but soon had company when Cory Crapser, Steve Bangart and Brock
Wright closed in and made it a four car battle for third. Cory Crapser worked the
bottom groove to secure the position just as Stark
brought his car to the pits with mechanical trouble. Kummer had a solid hold on the
lead ahead of Chris Crapser up until a scary crash on lap 14 brought out the red flag.
Jared Loos and John Goulden were side by side going for the seventh position when
Loos made contact with Goulden sending both cars into the front stretch wall which caused
Gouldens car to violently roll over. Goulden was uninjured from the incident,
however, his car was less fortunate. When the race was restared, Kummer felt heavy
pressure from Chris Crapser who dove to the bottom of the track trying to find an opening.
Kummer was able to shut the door on his challenger and hold on for the win after
leading the entire 15 lap event. Chris Crapser put up a stout challenge for the lead
late in the race, but had to settle for runner-up money on this night. Cory
Crapser backed up last weeks feature win with a solid third place run. Ryan Lindner
came across the line in fourth just ahead of Wright.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were next to pull trackside while a light mist continued to
fall over the Speedway. Cautions flew on lap one, two and three for several spinouts which
could be attributed to the extra moisture being laid down on the track surface. Adam
Hensel took control out front as the race finally stayed green with three laps in. Paul
Erickson gave
chase about a car length behind, while Robby Bunkelman fought to hold on to the third spot
while feeling pressure from Jim Willner. Out front, Erickson was able to close the gap on
Hensel and began to challenge for the lead when all of a sudden Hensel's car gave out on
the backstretch sending him coasting to the infield. After taking over the lead, Erickson
ran the bottom groove while Bunkelman ran a slightly higher line two car lengths behind.
Willner had control of the third position but Randy Spacek and Shaun Mcfadden quickly
closed in behind. Just as the field passed the halfway mark, a five car wreck in turn two
sent Spacek, Mcfadden and Bill Schwantes to the pits.
Spacek was the only one able to make his way back out to finish the race. Erickson kept
the lead after the restart but felt heavy pressure on the high side from Bunkelman. This
left the bottom open for Willner to sneak under Bunkelman and take over second. Erickson
was able to stretch out his lead to several car lengths before a lap 17 caution signaled
the end of the race giving Erickson the win. Willner held on for a second place finish
ahead of Lance Leu, Scott Geiger and Terry Gorst. Gorst was also the "Hard
Charger" of the race after coming from 14th to finish fifth.
Next up was the 20 lap Main Event in the WISSOTA Modifieds. Chris Oertel and Scott
Duval led the field around to get the green flag. Oertel stuck his car on the bottom to
take the early lead while Duval chose the high line close behind. Kent Baxter held on to
third while Luke Schilling and Dan Konrardy battled a car length behind. Schilling cleared
Konrardy and
quickly dropped down low to make the pass on Kent Baxter. Meanwhile, out front, Duval
continued to work the high line on Oertel as they ran side by side, with Oertel keeping a
slight advantage down low. Schilling was all by himself in third at the halfway mark while
Konrardy, Kent Baxter and Mark Baxter all fought over the fourth and fifth positions. The
outside groove began to come in for Duval as the laps wound down and he kept getting a
better run out of the corners as the
race wore on. Duval was finally able to complete the winning pass on Oertel with four laps
remaining to get the win. Duval held on for the win after he and Oertel put on a great
show for the fans while battling for the lead. Schilling came across the line third ahead
of Konrardy and Kent Baxter.
Ron/John Kunninger came from the outside of row three to take the win in the Two-Man
Cruiser Feature. They used a late race pass on Dave/Steve Knauf to get into victory lane.
Matt Scmidt/Tom Podratz ran strong all night and picked up a third place finish just ahead
of Gary Schubert/Rich Delis.
