July 16, 2004; Unity, WI. - D&A
Automotive and Mid-Wisconsin Bank sponsored this week's racing program which featured the
second appearance of the season by the always exciting Thunder Bikes. The Thunder
Bike Feature belonged to Steve Kastin who snatched the lead away from Mark Ziedler late in
the race to take the win. Chris Oertel took command of the WISSOTA Modified feature early
on and held the lead for the remainder of the event.
Randy Spacek picked up a hard fought win in his WISSOTA Super Stock. Other
Feature winner's included Steve Bangart in the WISSOTA Street Stocks and Jim Poyda in the
WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.
The first Feature race of the evening belonged to the Midwest Modifieds. Jim Poyda
blasted from the pole position to take the early lead in front of Mickey Nosser and Shane
Halopka. Joe Bablick ran close behind in fourth ahead of Ken Heser. Poyda proved to have a
strong car as he held a three car length lead as the race neared the halway point.
Meanwhile, the battle for second was just heating up between Nosser and Halopka. Nosser
had his car hooked up on the high side
and ran door to door with Halopka for several laps.
Poyda had trouble maneuvering around a lapped car, which allowed Nosser and Halopka to
pull up on his back bumper with two laps to go. Nosser then switched to the low groove to
try and make the pass, but in the process ran over a marker tire which rolled onto the
track and brought out the caution on the white flag lap. Poyda held a sizeable lead for
most of the race and survived a chaotic last lap to pick up the win. Halopka came out on
top of an exciting race long
battle with Nosser to take second. Bablick picked up a heat win earlier in the night and
came across the line third in the feature. Heser came from the fifth row to take home
fourth, while Mike Molitor rounded out the top five.
On the second attempt to start the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, a scary crash put a
halt on the action. Several cars got together in turn two resulting in Cory Crapser's car
to roll over and land in front of another car which made contact and collapsed part of the
roll cage. Aside from a badly bruised hand, Cory was uninjured from the incident. When the
race finally got going it was all action. Steve Bangart chose the high side and ran door
to door with Jared Loos for the top spot with neither car being able to secure the
position. Chris Crapser soon closed in on the leaders and made it a three way battle for
the lead. A lap eight caution changed the complexion of the race by putting Paul Lieders,
Scott Miller and Roger Walker right behind the front three for the restart. Loos was able
to take the lead after the restart but got loose in turn one and spun handing the lead
back to Bangart.
Chris Crapser dove his car deep into the corners trying to get a run on the exit but
Bangart held him off each time. Lieders ran in third and received heavy pressure from
Walker who was running the high line trying to make the pass. Chris Crapser tried one last
move down low on the last lap but Bangart was able to hold on for his second win of the
season. Lieders took home third after winning his earlier in the night. Point leader
Walker worked his way from outside the
fifth row to a top four finish. Scott Miller won his heat and finished off his night with
a fifth place feature finish.
A lap one caution shook up the starting lineup and put Jerry Stanton on the Pole for
the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Stanton took the lead at the start with Randy Spacek a
car length behind. Jim Willner and Adam Hensel battled over third while trying to keep
pace with Stanton and Spacek out front. Paul Erickson was all by himself in fifth with
John Fiern and Jamie Strebig gave chase behind him. The leaders closed in on lapped
traffic at the halfway point. Stanton chose to go to the outside of the lapped car and
Spacek chose the bottom. Spacek made the right choice and took over the lead while Hensel
followed Spacek into second and Stanton got shuffled back to third. Once he got out front,
Spacek stretched his lead to four car lengths until the caution flew again with five laps
to go. Spacek was able to get a good jump on the restart and held a two car length
advantage over Hensel and Stanton as they took the white flag. Spacek was able to run
several different lines throughout the race and it paid off with his first win of the
season. Henselcame from mid pack to claim the runner-up spot. Stanton led the first half
of the race and ended up third ahead of Willner and Erickson.
Chris Oertel shot from the second row into the lead at the start of the WISSOTA
Modified feature. Jeff Spacek worked his way around Scott Veseley and set his sights on
Oertel who had already gained a four car length lead out front. Behind Spacek, there was a
great four car battle going for third between Rob Genett, Veseley, Luke Schilling and Dan
Konrardy.
Spacek was slowly starting to close the gap between himself and Oertel at the halfway
point, but a caution on lap 12 put him on his back bumper for the restart. Oertel got a
good jump after the restart and again drove away to a two car length lead over Spacek. The
best battle on the track was for third between Genett and Konrardy who traded the position
several times before Konrardy finally got the advantage. Oertel continued to hold the top
spot with Spacek tight on
his back bumper as the laps wound down. Spacek dove low in turn one and hit a marker tire
which brought out the caution and sent him to the tail of the field, ending his chance at
a win. Oertel held off Konrardy in the closing laps and scored another impressive win.
Konrardy had a solid run and came across the line second. Local fan favorite, Genett ran
up front all night and finished third ahead of Mark Baxter and Kevin Rogers.
The final race of the evening was in the Two-Man cruiser division. Porter/Smazal used
the pole position to take the early lead ahead of Bach/Fuchs and Becker/Thieme. A four car
wreck brought out the caution with three laps in the books and put Lindner/Wilke and
Davis/Fitzgerald behind Porter/Smazal for the restart. Davis/Fitzgerlad moved to the
outside to take second and then switched to the low groove to take the lead from
Porter/Smazal. Davis/Fitzgerald stretched their lead to several car lengths as they
crossed the line ahead of Lindner/Wilke and Schmidt/Podratz.
