September 11, 2004; Unity, WI. - 86 Cars
filled the pits on Saturday night for the second annual Monster Mash Invitational. Some of
the best drivers in WISSOTA made the pull to Monster Hall Raceway for a chance at the
large payout advertised for the event. The top five drivers in each division did receive
the advertised payout, However, anyone
finishing outside of the top five in all six divisions received $50.00 at the pay window.
After the racing program, drivers, crews and fans were treated to a pig roast at the
nearby Monster Hall campground presented by Seubert Calf Ranches.
The racing program itself was highlighted by exciting back and forth action in
all of the feature events. Shane Halopka scored his fifth feature in nine days in his
WISSOTA Midwest Modified. Wayne Dean brought his Vince's Speed Shop powered WISSOTA Street
Stock to victory lane after leading all 20 laps. Jim Willner had the car to beat in the
WISSOTA Super Stocks as he won both his heat and feature events. Craig Thatcher
battled his way from the sixth row to an impressive win in the WISSOTA Modifieds. The
WISSOTA Late Model feature went to Nick Anvelink who used a late race pass on Ron Berna to
grab the $2,000 winner's check.
Bob Bouch led the first lap of the Midwest Modified feature from the pole, but Shane
Halopka wasted no time in charging from the third row to challenge for the lead. Halopka
moved up to the high side to take the lead on lap three, while Mickey Nosser and Bouch
battled over the second position. It took Halopka several laps to pull away from Nosser,
but when he did he never looked back and dominated the remainder of the event. The second
position however, was still up
in the air between Nosser, Bouch and Kevin Vought. The three cars were nose to tail on the
last lap with Nosser using the high line to take home second ahead of Bouch. Dean Hoffman
came across the line in fourth ahead of Kent Paulson.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks were next to pull trackside with Wayne Dean and Jeff Heintz
leading the field to the green flag. Dean took the lead at the start followed by Jay
Kesan, Roger Walker, Ron Hanestad and Travis Krause. Dean was able to hold a two car
length advantage over Kesan until the caution flag flew on lap nine. After the restart
Walker got a good run to the inside of Kesan and took over the second position behind Dean
who was three car lengths out front.
Walker closed in on Dean's back bumper with three laps to go but Dean was able to fend off
the challenge and hold on for the win. Hanestad came out on top of a late race battle for
third with Krause and Kesan.
Jim Willner used the bottom groove to slingshot himself from the second row into the
lead of the Super Stock feature. Ken Truscott and Adam Hensel ran two wide for second with
Hensel up high and Truscott working the bottom, while trying to keep pace with Willner who
continued to slowly pull away from the rest of the field. John Fiern held on to the fourth
spot near the halfway mark while fighting to hold off advances from both Mark Stender and
Randy Spacek. Out front, Willner continued to hold a commanding lead while Truscott and
Hensel battled back and forth for the runner-up spot. Willner held on to take the
win after leading all twenty laps and completing a clean sweep of the evening's Super
Stock action. Ken Truscott made a rare visit to the track and it paid off with a solid
second place finish. John Fiern used
a late race pass on "Track Champion" Adam Hensel to finish third.
Next up was the 25 lap feature in the WISSOTA Modifieds. Todd Siddons blasted from the
second row to snatch the early lead away from Jason Nordhougen. Nordhougen and Dan
Konrardy ran in the second and third positions until lap five when Craig Thatcher made
short work of both drivers while maneuvering the outside cushion. Thatcher quickly closed
the gap on Siddons and began to challenge for the lead on lap nine. It took Thatcher
several laps to find the groove he was looking for but when he did he shot right into the
lead and put several car lengths between himself and Siddons. Thatcher survived a flurry
of cautions in the late going to claim the win and a $1,000 payday.
Thatcher's impressive run started from the sixth row. Siddons led the first half of the
event but had to settle for second after a fine performance. Scott Duval looked to
challenge for the lead in the late going but ran out of laps and earned a top three
finish. Adam Heuer fought his way from the seventh row to finish fourth ahead of Paul
Harelstad.
Ron Berna used a front row starting spot to take the early lead in the Late Model Main
Event. Terry Anvelink gave chase in second while A.J Diemel battled with Nick Anvelink for
the third position. Terry Anvelink capitalized on a lap 13 restart to nearly claim the
lead on the high side. Berna was able to fend off the challenge and reclaim the lead. This
battle for the lead allowed Nick Anvelink to close in on Terry Anvelink and overtake him
for the runner-up spot. Nick Anvelink stayed right on Berna's back bumper for a number of
laps before ducking to the inside of Berna in turn three and came out of turn
four with the lead. Nick Anvelink was able to hold on to the lead in the remaining laps
and scored the win after leading the final four laps of the thirty lap distance. Berna
finished second after leading the majority of the event. Terry Anvelink finished off a
fine run in third place ahead of A.J Diemel and MJ Mcbride.
