June 4, 2004; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall
Raceway presented a full race program this past Friday night sponsored by Hardees and
Central WI Auto Body Association. Chris Oertel picked up his first Feature win in the
WISSOTA Modifieds after leading all 20 laps. Jim Willner came out on top of the caution
filled WISSOTA Super Stock Feature.
Roger Walker picked up his second clean sweep in as many weeks in the WISSOTA Street
Stocks, while Mickey
Nosser took home his third Feature win in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled out first with Shane Halopka and Joe Bablick
setting the pace. Halopka got the jump at the start and took the lead followed closely by
Bablick. Behind them, there was a four car battle going on for third between Randy
Bargender, Jim Poyda, Mickey Nosser, and Ken Heser.
Bablick had mechanical trouble on lap seven and had to pull off giving the second spot
to Poyda. Halopka continued to build on his lead while Poyda held on to second ahead of a
two wide battle for third between Nosser and Bargender. Nosser worked his way around
Bargender on lap 10 and then began working over Poyda for second. A lap 13 caution
tightened up the field and put Nosser, Poyda, and Bargender behind Halopka for the
restart. Halopka held on to the lead after the restart but had mechanical trouble and had
to pull off with one lap to go.
Nosser inherited the lead on lap fourteen and took the checkered flag. Poyda had a
strong car but ran out of laps going for the lead late in the race. Dave Salzman came from
deep in the field to finish fourth ahead of Bargender and Mike Molitor.
Roger Walker drew the pole position for the Wissota Street Stock Feature and lined up
alongside Dave Teatz. A five car pile up on the opening lap sent several cars to the pits
for repairs. Walker charged to the lead on lap one while Cory Crapser, Teatz, and Butch
Kummer battled it out for second. Crapser took over second with three laps in and began
closing the four car length gap between himself and Walker. By lap eight, Walker and
Crapser were all alone out front
with Teatz giving chase in third.
Todd Lindner worked the high line on Kummer and was able to complete the pass just
before a lap 11 caution that sent Kummer down pit road with a flat tire. When the race
went green Walker ran the high line with Crapser running down low tight on his bumper.
Teatz held on to third but was feeling heavy pressure from Lindner and Zack Kauth. Walker
and Crapser ran door to door for the lead with Walker getting a better run out of the
corner until a last lap caution ended the race. Walker led all 15 laps and picked up his
second win of the season. Crapser spent the last few laps side by side for the lead, but
had to settle for a second place finish. Teatz had a another solid run taking home third
ahead of Lindner and Kauth.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were up next with Mark Stender and Jim Willner filling out the
front row. Willner used the high groove to pull into the early lead just as back to back
cautions flew on laps three and four. When the race went green Willner kept his lead but
had Paul Erickson and Adam Hensel close behind battling each other as well as trying to
catch
Willner. The fourth position was still up in the air, however as Randy Spacek, Don Drew,
and Lance Leu raced multiple grooves vying for the position.
After a lap 11 caution, Hensel darted below Erickson for second and immediately set his
sights on Willner who had a three car length lead over his pursuers. Spacek ran in fourth
with Jamie Strebig and Terry Gorst challenging for the position, while Scott Johnson, Mike
Duhr and Bill Schwantez had an exciting battle late in the race with Duhr coming out in
front. Willner was able to hold off several advances from Hensel and picked up his first
win of the season. Hensel took a firm hold on the point lead with a second place finish.
Erickson was a strong contender for the win and came away with third ahead of Spacek who
had to fight a tight handling race car and still managed a top four finish. Terry Gorst
was the "Hard Charger" of the night as he came from 17th place to finish fifth.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were next to pull trackside with Scott Vesley and Dan Konrardy on
the front line. Chris Oertel bolted from the second row to take the lead on lap one. Then
a string of three consecutive cautions flew on the second lap. Oertel got a good jump on
the restart and had a comfortable lead over Jeff Spacek who got around Paul Niznik and
began reeling in Oertel who was all by himself out front. The man on the move was Scott
Duval who charged up from 13th to challenge Spacek for second on lap seven. Duval used the
bottom groove to get by Spacek. Rob Genett held on to fourth ahead of a good battle
between Luke Schilling, Paul Niznik and Dave Baxter. By lap 16 Oertel had built up a half
straightaway lead over Duval and Spacek who jumped up to the high groove to challenge for
second. Oertel dominated much of the race and ran uncontested to the checkered flag and
his first Feature win in a Modified. Duval gained 11
positions on his way to a second place finish. Spacek also had to come from deep in the
field to take home a top three finish. Schilling made a late race pass on Genett to finish
fourth.
The final race of the evening was in the Two-Man Cruiser division. Davis/Fitzgerald
used the pole position to get into the lead ahead of a very fast Ron/John Kunninger car.
Lindner/Wilke held on to fourth while Bargender/Martin, Schubert/Delis, and Dave/Steve
Knauf traded the fourth spot for several laps. In the closing laps Ron/John Kunninger were
able to close within one car length of Davis/Fitzgerald who had their car hooked up on the
outside birm. Davis/Fitzgerald led all 10 laps and picked up the win. Ron/John Kunninger
closed in on the leaders late in the race but couldn't complete the pass. Lindner/Wilke
topped off a solid run with a third place finish.
