June 25, 2004; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall
Raceway held its annual Midseason Championship program this past Friday. The Feature
lineups were determined by season point standings and the top three finishers in each
class received trophies.
The fans were treated to some great side by side racing in all five divisions
since there were multiple grooves to choose from. Luke Schilling led from start to finish
in his WISSOTA Modified. Paul Erickson blasted from the second row to take the win in the
WISSOTA Super Stocks. The WISSOTA Street Stock feature belonged to Roger Walker who led
the entire 15 lap event. Shane Halopka had to work his way around Mickey Nosser to get the
win in his WISSOTA Midwest Modified.
Nosser and Randy Bargender led the field of WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to the green
flag. The caution flew three times before Nosser completed lap one as the leader. Halopka
got around Bargender on lap two and began to shorten Nossers three car length lead.
Bargender held on to third with Jim Poyda, Ken Heser and Dave Salzman right behind him
jockeying for position. Out front, Halopka worked the high line to pull alongside Nosser
and took the lead five laps into the race. Halopka was able to retain the lead ahead of
Nosser after a lap 12 caution set up a three lap sprint to the finish. Halopka pulled to a
three car length lead over Nosser while Bargender and Mark Alburtis battled over the third
spot. Halopka came across the finish line with a four car length lead over Nosser.
Bargender battled his way back from last place after an early caution to finish third
ahead of Alburtis and Jerome Kowalski.
In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Roger Walker used the pole position to jump out front and
take the early lead while Cory Crasper, Butch Kummer, and Dave Teatz battled for the
runner-up spot. This allowed Walker to pull out to a two car length lead. A five car
pile-up on lap four tightened up the field behind Walker. After the restart Walker chose
the second groove up while Kummer and Crasper were hot on his tail running on the inside
birm. The battle for fourth was also a close one as Teatz held the spot but had Chris
Crasper tight on his bumper searching for an opening to make the pass. Back to back
cautions on laps 10 and 11 allowed the drivers to settle down and think about what they
had to do in the next four laps to get to victory lane. As the race went green, Walker
again opted to run the high side. Kummer chose the bottom groove and was able to duck
under Walker coming in to the corner, but couldnt keep enough momentum on the exit
to make the pass. Walker used his s! peed out of the corner to hold on for the win. Kummer
mounted a strong challenge for the lead in the closing laps and finished second. Cory
Crasper had another solid run finishing third. Teatz took home fourth while Scott Miller
came from mid-pack to round out the top five.
Paul Erickson dove under Adam Hensel and Randy Spacek to lead the first lap of the
WISSOTA Super Stock Feature. Another driver on the move was Jim Willner who flew from the
third row to make the pass on Hensel for second. Willner was able to catch Erickson and
those two battled for the lead while Hensel, Spacek, Lance Leu and Mark Stender did some
bumping and banging over the third and fourth positions. Spacek had mechanical trouble and
pulled off at the halfway mark giving up a top three run. Meanwhile, Erickson kept his
lead but couldnt shake Willner who stayed tight on his back bumper hoping to
capitalize on any mistake made by the leader. Erickson however, continued to run smooth
consistent laps and scored the win. Willner drove a clean race and finished off a solid
run with a second place finish. Hensel edged out Stender by a bumper to finish fourth.
Scott Geiger made a late race pass on Leu to round out the top five.
Next up was the 20 lap WISSOTA Modified Feature with point leader Luke Schilling
starting from the pole. Schilling got his car hooked up on the bottom of the track and
shot out front to take the lead. The second spot was still up in the air however, as Chris
Oertel had his hands full with Jeff Spacek who was hooked up on the high side. Scott Duval
worked his way from the fifth row to battle Kent Baxter for fourth. Schilling was able to
find more bite down low and built up a three car length lead as the laps wound down.
Oertel and Spacek continued to give chase but couldnt make up enough ground to
challenge for the lead. The best battle on the track was for the sixth and seventh
positions between Rob Genett, Mike Bauer and Dave Baxter. Schilling led from flag to flag
and finished off a dominating performance with a trip to victory lane. Chris Oertel was
able to fend off the challenge from Jeff Spacek to claim the runner-up spot. Scott Duval
came across the line fourth ahe! ad of Kent Baxter.
Davis/Fitzgerald capitalized on a front row starting spot to take the win in the
Twoj-Man Cruiser division. Ron/John Kunninger were able to close in on Davis/Fitzgerald
late in the race but ran out of laps and came across the line second. Schubert/Delis
battled with Ron/John Kunninger for much of the race and came away with a top three
finish.
