July 2, 2004; Unity, WI. - Monster Hall
Raceway welcomed the Tri Star Challenge Series Late Models back to the track for the sixth
consecutive season. John Kaanta rolled into Monster Hall Raceway leading Joel Cryderman by
a single point in the Challenge Series standings.
Jeff Heintz took home the win in his WISSOTA Street Stock while making his first
visit to the track this season. Defending National Point Champion Paul Harelstad earned
another trip to victory lane in the WISSOTA Modifieds. Terry Casey put on a dominating
performance and picked up the win in the 40 lap Tri-Star Challenge Series Main Event.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks kicked off the night's feature action with Heintz and Dave
Teatz leading the field to the green flag. Heintz powered his way out front to lead the
first lap while Chris Crapser and Butch Kummer fought over the runner-up spot. A violent
four car crash on lap five put the field under a red flag caution after Scott Krause
rolled over onto his roof. He was banged up but otherwise uninjured from the incident.
When the field got back to green flag racing Heintz again held on to the lead while Chris
Crapser continued to pressure him for the spot. The battle for third was also heating up
between Jared Loos, Dan Gullikson and Roger Walker. Gullikson worked the high line and was
able to secure the third position near the halfway mark.
Out front, Heintz continued to hold off Crapser but Gullikson, Todd Lindner and Wayne
Dean quickly reeled in the leaders making it a five car battle for the lead with six laps
remaining. Dean shot to the outside birm to make the pass on both Lindner and Gullikson.
As the white flag flew Heintz, Dean and Crapser were three wide for the lead with Dean
still working the outside. Heintz found enough bite below Dean to hold on for the win
after leading all 20 laps. Dean was the "Hard Charger" of the race coming from
the sixth row to finish second. Chris Crapser held on for third after challenging for the
lead for much of the race. Lindner came across the line fourth ahead of Gullikson.
Mark Baxter used the pole position to lead the first lap of the WISSOTA Modified
feature while running side by side with Paul Harelstad. Harelstad got his car hooked up on
the high groove and pulled into the lead with three laps in the books. Mark Baxter stayed
close behind him looking for an opening down low. Schilling was soon able to close in on
Mark Baxter but couldn't find enough bite to make the pass. The best battle on the track
was for fifth between Paul knauf, Kent
Baxter, Chris Oertel and Jed Moore. Harelstad held on to a seven car length lead over Mark
Baxter and Schilling as the field passed the halfway mark but back to back cautions on lap
17 eliminated Harelstad's lead and gave Mark Baxter another shot at the lead.
Harelstad was again able to pull away from his pursuers and hold a solid lead over Mark
Baxter and Schilling. Knauf held on to third just ahead of a three car battle for fourth
between Oertel, Moore and Scott Duval. Harelstad held on to his lead after a lap 23
caution and picked up the win. Mark Baxter had another impressive run taking home second
after
holding off several advances from Schilling. Knauf came off a Heat win earlier in the
night to finish fourth. The man on the move was Duval who battled his way from the rear of
the field to get a top five finish.
Pat Doar accumulated the most Tri Star Challenge Series passing points in his heat but
due to an inversion of the top six qualifiers he started from outside the third row. Leon
Plank and Duane Mahder filled out the front row for the 40 lap Late Model Feature race.
Mahder shot out front to take the early lead ahead of Plank while Nick Anvelink and Terry
Casey ran side by side for third.
A flurry of cautions flew on laps four, five and six which caused some concern on the
drivers part that they would have enough fuel to finish the race. When the caution flew
again on lap twelve the officials red flagged the race to allow the crews to fuel up their
cars and provide the driver with additional tear-off's for their helmets. When the race
got restarted Casey jumped into the lead ahead of Mahder and Plank. Doar fought to hold on
to fourth while being heavily challenged by Steve Isenberg.
Casey began to drive away from the field quickly and built up a near straightaway lead
with 15 laps remaining. Mahder held on to second while Doar made his way around Plank and
set his sights on the second spot. Casey was again able to stretch his lead after a lap 32
caution and held on for the win. Mahder fought off the late race charge of Doar to take
home the runner-up money. Doar survived the early race carnage to finish third ahead of
Plank. Isenberg capped off a solid outing with a Heat win and a fifth place finish in the
feature.
