Anvelink ends Late Model feature dry spell,
Mullen streak continues in IMCA Modified action at Seymour!

By Dave Panske

July 9, 2000; Seymour, WI - Heavy rains that washed out most of the weekend in Northeastern Wisconsin, cleared and gave a perfect night for racing Sunday et the Seymour Tri-Oval Raceway. Terry Anvelink walked off with the WISSOTA Late Model spotlight feature and the $1000 first place prize. Brian Mullen continued his streak collecting feature win number 4 in the IMCA Mods. Jamie Colwell and Tim Van De Hei picked up their 3rd feature wins in the Street and IMCA Stock divisions.

Terry Anvelink (#32) won the special "Spotlight" WISSOTA Late Model feature. The feature victory was his first since July 5, 1998 and he won $1,000 for his efforts.

The Late Model spotlight feature took the green with Tim Buhler taking the top spot followed by Jim Rychtik, Troy Springborn, Terry Anvelink, Terry Casey and Tom Naeyaert. Buhler pulled to a several length lead before the lone caution of the 25 lapper appeared on lap 8. On the restart, Anvelink powered to the outside and moved tnto the top spot after running side by side with Buhler for a couple laps.

Once in front, Anvelink started to build a lead and drove on to collect his first feature win here since July 5, 1998. On lap 13, Buhler slipped wide in the tri oval enough to allow Naeyaert to sneak into the runner up spot. Naeyaert closed the gap on the leader, but was a car length short when the laps ran out, settling for second place. Springborn took over the third spot on lap 20, with Buhler holding off Casey for the fourth place finish. Dean Maurer rounded out the top six.

Joel Schmit took the early lead in the IMCA Modified main followed by Dennis Young, Dan Deau, Mike Mashl, Scott Mullan and Jerry Muenster. A spin brought out the only caution in the race on lap 3, and Schrnit took the top spot again following the restart. Mashl moved into the runner up spot as Brian Mullen moved to the front from his mid pack starting spot. Mashl moved inside of Schmit going into the tri-oval on lap 9 for the lead, but Mullan threaded the needle between then pair and took the lead at the line.

Once in front, Mullen slowly pulled away leaving the race for the runner up spot. Mashl held second to the finish with Schmit battling with Joe White, Scott Mullan and Muenster to the finish. White took the third spot away on lap 18 with Schmit holding fourth. Scott Mullen was fifth and Muenster sixth.

The win for Mullan was his fourth straight and ties him with two drivers, Dave Ritchie in 1985 and Randy Boegh in 1984 as the only Modified drivers to win four features in a rowfor N.E.W. Dirt. The all time record is 7 straight held by Pete Parker with his late model in 1992.

Dave Verhagen led the opening lap of the Street Stock main before Jeff Treml pulled into the top spot bringing Brandon Czarapata, Jamie Colwell, Darci Czarapata, Bob Bernier and Jesse Colwell along. Jamie and Jesse Colwell moved into second and third on lap 3 and the Greenleaf connection battled for the top spot. Point leader, Jamie Colwell moved to the top spot on lap 6 and started to build a lead until the lone caution appeared on lap 9.

On the restart, Jesse Colwell moved into the runner up spot and it was another brothers duel for the lead until a fiat tire force Jesse out of the race on lap 17, leaving Jamie alone in front, and the battle for the runner up spot. Treml was now in second and Chaz Van Ooyen worked his way from the back of the field into third with Travis Van Straten and Dean Kellner right behind.

Colwell took the victory, his third of the season, well ahead of Van Ooyen, who took second from Treml on the final lap. Treml held third with Kellner nipping Van Straten for fourth. Bernier rounded out the top six places.

Joe White pulled into the lead of the IMCA Stock Car main at the start followed by Joe Kerkhoff, Mike Franzke, Chad Wilcox, Jon Wolf and Scott Karcz.

One caution slowed the race on lap 5 for a two car spin and White resumed the lead on the restart with John Heinz moving into the runner up spot, Tim Van De Hei moved into third, Wolf, Kerkhoff and Shawn Wagner were right behind.

Jay Matthais (#8) scored a victory this evening on the third mile clay tri-oval, when he took top honors in his IMCA Stock Car heat race. 7900b.jpg (14990 bytes)

Van De Hei sat in third for several laps watching the leaders exchange paint, he pulled outside and on lap 12, pulled into the top spot and pulled away from the field leaving the battle for the runner up spot. White and Heinz were joined by Wolf, Benji LaCrosse, Jeremy Christians, Jerry Wilinski and Jay Matthias, in a tight battle to the final lap. White held onto the runner up spot with Heinz taking third. Christians edged into the fourth place finish with LaCrosse and Wolf rounding out the top six.

The IMCA Modified consy provided a wild two car rollover. Steve Domalick, in only his second race this season, got sideways in turn one, and caught the car of M.J. Hinz. Domalick rolled over sideways with the Hinz going over the top of the car and spinning end for end end then rolling once sideways before both cars ended up on their tops. Both ddvers were OK, but both cars were done for the night.

There will be NO racing next Sunday, July 16, at the Seymour Tri Oval Raceway because of the annual Outagamie County Fair. The full racing programs with WISSOTA Late Models IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Street Stock will resume on Sunday night, July 23.
