Naeyaert tops LM
action, Mullen survives in Mod main at Seymour! May 28, 2000; Seymour, WI - For a nice change of pace from the weather the past month, Sunday started rainy and cold, but cleared to a clear calm night for the big Budweiser Memorial Day racing program at the Seymour Tri Oval Raceway. Three drivers came out of the night first time winners here this season with one repeat performance.
The WISSOTA Late Models the track first with Troy Springborn taking the lead at the start with Dean Maurer, Jim Rychtik, Terry Anvelink and Terry Casey behind. Pete Parker pulled through the field into the runner up spot on lap 5 and set his sights on catching the fleeting Springborn. A caution for a spin on lap 11, erased the lead and bunched the field. On the restart, Parker suddenly pulled out of the race with rear end trouble which left Springborn to now deal with Anvelink and Naeyaert. On lap 13, Naeyaert powered into the second spot and on lap 16, took over the top spot and then cruised to his first feature win of the season. Springborn maintaines his point lead with the second place finish Anvelink took third followed by Tim Buhler, Maurer, and Casey.
The IMCA Stock Cars continue to grow and improve and drove off with a non stop
feature event. Dave Bouche powered into the lead and paced the first 2 circuits before
Shawn Wagner took over. Jason Czarapata, Jerry Wilinski, Tim Van De Hei and Travis Van
Straten all moved up by lap 5. The battle for the runner up spot allowed Wagner to build a
several length lead by the time Van De Van De Hei set out and ran down the leader and after a couple of side by side laps,
pulled into the lead on lap 17. Van De Hei held on to win his first Tri-Oval feature of
the season. Wagner was
The IMCA Modifieds had trouble from the initial start, with several cautions before a lap could be registered. Half the time limit was gone before the race finally started. Jerry Muenster took up the lead position but had R.M. Van Pay, Scott Mullen, Brian Mullen and Dennis Young to contend with. A caution on lap 5 bunched the pack with Muenster still leading the way. On the restart, Brian Mullen took to the outside and pulled off the pass for second and the lead by lap 6. Another incident on lap 9 caused the time limit to expire and a two lap dash to the finish. Mullen held on as Van Pay took second and challenged over the final lap, to win his first Tri-Oval feature this season. Van Pay was right behind at the finish with Muenster taking third, Scott Mullen fourth, Brad Rohloff fifth and Jamie Schmidt rounding out the top six.
The Street Stocks looked like they would run off a non stop event as well with Jeff Treml setting pace for the first 2 laps before Lance Arenson took over on lap 3. Arenson, who attended his high school graduation in the afternoon, led the way until the lone caution on lap 7. On the restart, Arenson had Treml, last week winner, Jamie Colwell, Phil Hiles, Fred Davister, point leader, Jamie Colwell and Bob Bemier right behind. The race stayed green to the finish with Jamie Colwell moving into the runner up spot on lap 16. Heavy pressure on the leader finally opened a slight gap to the inside, which Colwell settled into as the white flag appeared. Colwell pulled ahead on the back chute and held on to win his second straight division feature. Arenson took the runner up finish with the other half of the Colwell team, Jesse, taking third. Treml finished his best run in fourth with Bernier and Hiles rounding out the top six. Next week will feature Goldstar Racing Supplies as the title sponsor.
