July 8, 2001; Seymour, WI - A heavy downpour at 5 PM caused a ½ hour delay in racing Sunday night but a full show was completed just after 10 p.m. at the Seymour Tri Oval Raceway.
The Mods kicked off the feature racing with Chad Nelson grabbing the lead over Chris Derenne, Mike Broekman, R.M. Van Pay, Joel Schmit and Dan Deau. Nelson did a good job leading the first 4 laps before Derenne slipped by on lap 5. On the restart, Van Pay drove to the outside and took control of the race. Jeremie Hedrick had moved through traffic to the runner up spot at the mid point of the race and challenged Van Pay for a couple laps before Van Pay took charge and held a car length lead to the finish to claim his first feature of the season here. It was also a record setting win with the checker being his 50th career mod win at Seymour. Hedrick drove to a strong runner-up finish, his third straight for the weekend. Derenne held off Mike Wedelstadt for third. Dennis Young finished fifth and Nelson ran to his best finish of the year in sixth. Bob White took the lead at the start of the Street feature and pulled to a slight lead over Phil Hiles, Darren Otto, Dave Verhagen, David Hoerning, and Tim Cayemberg. A three car spin and a stall brought out a pair of cautions on laps 5 and 6, for the only slow downs of the race. White continued to set the pace despite having the field bunched behind. Otto moved into the runner up spot after the restart with Hoerning, Charlie Van Ooyen and point leader, Jamie Colwell in line. Colwell made a move to the front and pulled into second on lap 10 and then was able to work into the lead on lap 14. Van Ooyen moved into the runner up spot on lap 16, and started to close on the leader, but ran out of laps to make a serious challenge. Colwell took his third feature flag of the season with Van Ooyen a strong second. Otto took third with Marc Marcille making his best run of the season to place fourth. Hoerning was fifth and Hiles rounded out the top six. Shawn Kilgore took command of the Stock Car main and set the pace for the first 5 laps before Brandon Czarapata took over on lap 6. Tim Van De Hei moved into the runner up spot on lap 9 after a restart that brought Travis Van Straten, Chaz Van Ooyen and point leader, Jeremy Christians to the front as well. A final caution on lap 14 set up a six lap dash with Czarapata still in control. Van De Hei, Christians, Kilgore and Greg Gretz were right behind. Van De Hei went low and Christians went three wide to the outside to duel for the lead. Christians emerged first but Van De Hei was still alongside and was scored ahead with two laps left. Christians kept the pressure on and took the white flag as the leader, by inches. Those proved to be important marks as a three car spin in the tri oval brought out a caution on the final lap, making the finish according to the last completed lap, giving the win, his third of the season, to Christians. Van De Hei was the second place finisher with Kilgore, making his best run of the year taking third. Gretz, also best season finish here, was fourth. Jon Wolf and Van Straten rounded out the top six. The Late Models closed the program with Mike Babino, Jr taking charge until point leader, Troy Springborn broke out into first on lap 5. Babino, Doug Klemp, Dean Maurer, Mark Mitchell and Tim Buhler were right behind. A three car spin with Mitchell, Maurer and Casey on lap 11 slowed the race and bunched the field on Springborn. Buhler moved into second with Tom Naeyaert making the outside line look good, moving into third. Pete Parker moved into fourth. A final caution on lap 16, set up a four laps dash. Naeyaert moved into the runner up spot on the restart and alongside of the leader. Springborn was running a bit stronger on the inside and held on to win his second feature of the year here. Parker caught and passed Naeyaert for the runner up spot two laps from the finish with Babino taking the fourth place finish, his best of the year. Buhler and Greg Dhein made up the top six finishers. Just a reminder, There will be NO racing this Sunday, July 15 at the Tri Oval due to the County Fair. Racing will resume on Sunday night, July 22.
