Seymour
opener delayed again!
By Dave Panske and Joe Verdegan |
May 12,
2001; Seymour, WI - Due to the heavy rains again this week,
N.E.W. DIRT has been forced to postpone their 17th season opener again this week. The club
regrets having to do this for the second time, but drivers safety and the quality of our
programs are the reasons for the delay For the second week in a row torrential
downpours late in the week have forced NEW DIRT officials to pull the plug and cancel the
planned Potawatomi Nation season opener at Seymour Tri-Oval Raceway scheduled for Sunday
night, May 13.
This is the third event to get rained out at the third-mile, clay tri-oval this season. A
planned practice day in April was washed out, as was the Green Bay Motorsports season
opener scheduled for May 6. "We figure we got about an inch of rain in 20 minutes out
there," said club vice president Bob Zegers. "Right now pit lane is completely
flooded and the track just became soup again with the huge rains we had."
Zegers said the season will most likely be extending a week or two into September to make
up for the lost nights in May. "We'll try again next Sunday. We may pick up some more
WISSOTA late model drivers who want to test the track out before the Potawatomi Series
race on Memorial Day weekend (May 27). We don't want to risk tearing up a bunch of
equipment. We're playing it safe."
Track officials will try again on Sunday May 20 at 6:30 with Northside Imports &
Domestics Night, along with Maplewood Shell. WISSOTA late models, IMCA modifieds, IMCA
stock cars and street stocks will compete.
