Casey
Shades Anvelink to Claim Seymour WISSOTA Late Model Opener!
By Joe Verdegan |
May 5,
2002; Seymour, WI - New London's "Mr. Excitement"
Terry Casey emerged triumphant in the "battle of the Terry's", as the New London
driver beat out Navarino's Terry Anvelink to claim the opening night 20 lap WISSOTA late
model feature at Seymour Tri-Oval Raceway Sunday night.
103 cars filled the pit area. The field included 30 IMCA modifieds, 29 street stocks, 25
IMCA stock cars, 16 WISSOTA late models and three four-bangers..
Casey shot into the lead from his outside pole position at the drop of the green.
Casey pulled out to a three car length lead, with Anvelink staying within striking
distance. Casey encountered lapped cars on lap nine. On lap 10 Anvelink slipped underneath
Casey coming out of turn two to grab the lead.
Three circuits later Casey stormed past Anvelink on the fronstretch to regain the top
spot. The caution flew on lap 14 when Ron Bomber spun in turn one. When racing resumed,
Casey held the top spot. With just three laps to go Anvelink pulled up alongside of Casey
on two occasions. As the white flag was displayed defending track champion Troy Springborn
joined the pair, setting up a three car duel for the win.
Casey was up for the challenge, as the New London driver bagged his second win in as many
nights, having won the feature the night prior at Shawano Speedway. Anvelink settled for
second, followed by Springborn, Tom Naeyaert and Tim Buhler rounding out the top five
finishers.
Former track champion Brian Mullen took the lead from the drop of the green and led
wire-to-wire, scoring the victory in the 20 lap IMCA modified feature. Mullen also scored
a clean sweep, winning his heat earlier in the night.
Mullen propelled from his pole position into the lead, leaving Todd Dart and Mike
Wedelstadt to trade paint for second. Mullen kept his foes at bay and began building up a
sizeable cushion that was wiped out when an AJ Diemel spin on lap five tightened the
field.
When racing resumed Mullen kept his top spot, white Dart muscled his way inside of
Wedelstadt for second. Rohloff worked his way past Wedelstadt two laps later and set his
sights on Dart. Rohloff ducked underneath the Algoma driver on several occasions but Dart
thwarted the Hortonville challenger's efforts.
Mullen began sifting his way through lapped traffic by lap twelve. Mullen went on to score
the win. Dart took second place money, followed by Brad Rohloff, who nipped Dart at the
line for second. Wedelstadt and Jared Siefert took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Pulaski's Junior Karcz passed defending track champion Jeremy Christians on the final lap
to claim the 20 lap IMCA stock car feature. Karcz also scored a clean sweep, winning his
heat race as well.
Karcz jumped into the lead from his front row starting spot to take the lead in the 20 lap
contest. Christians had wrestled away second from Jerry Wilinski and motored past Karcz
for the lead on lap three. The event's first yellow flew on lap four when rookie Greg
Stelse looped his mount in the tri-oval, drawing an amber. When racing resumed Christians
held the lead, with Karcz hot on his heels. Karcz was able to keep within three car
lengths of Christians until lap 16 when the race was halted for a Benji LaCrosse spin on
the frontstretch. Track officials ruled that Greg Gretz had made contact with LaCrosse,
causing him to spin. Gretz was black flagged while LaCrosse kept his third place spot.
With a four lap dash to the checkers remaining Karcz stalked Christians. On the final
round Karcz dove underneath Christians to grab the lead. Karcz hung on to claim the
victory. Christians kept second. Jason Czarapata, Shawn Wagner and John Heinz rounded out
the top five finishers.
LaCrosse suffered a flat tire and pulled off the track on the final lap.
Oconto's Bob White grabbed the lead at the midpoint of the contest and went on to capture
the 20 lap street stock feature.
Forestville's Von Eytcheson stormed from his row five starting spot into the lead on lap
three, passing polesitter Shawn Van Ooyen. Eytcheson immediately went to work building up
a full straightaway lead over the pack. Meanwhile White had battled into third, passing
Van Ooyen for second on lap eight. Eytcheson's luck took a turn for the worst when he
suffered a flat tire, forcing him to pit. White inherited the lead following a lap sixteen
caution, and proceeded to cruise to a convincing win. Trailing White at the checkers were
Phil Hiles, who beat third place finisher Jeremy Witala by mere inches. Jeff Treml and
Lance Arnenson rounded out the top five finishers.
Next Sunday night will be Potowatomi Bingo night at the track. Racing gets underway at
6:30 p.m.
