Dhein Takes First Tri-Oval Late Model Feature Checkered!
By Dave Panske

July 28, 2002; Seymour, WI - And yet another hot night for racing in Seymour. Plenty of action in all divisions produced four first time winners and one repeater Sunday night at the Tri Oval.

Greg Dhein started the WISSOTA Late Model feature on the pole and quickly settled into the lead followed by Tim Buhler, Randy Markwardt, T.J. White and Tom Naeyaert. Buhler pressured the leader for several laps, but as the non-stop race erased laps, Dhein was able to start to pull away from the field. Naeyaert caught and moved by Markwardt into third on lap16 and started to close on Buhler.

On lap 9 of the IMCA Stock Car feature, a six car crash on the back chute sent Larry Karcz, Jr (#36) off the track on his roof, with the car of Benji LaCrosse (#54) sitting on top.   There were no injuries and both cars were able to continue.  LaCrosse finished 6th and Karcz 12th.51201b.jpg (17266 bytes)
Mike Coel captured his first division feature win of the season Sunday night at the Tri- Oval.

Dhein, hot off a first career feature win Saturday night at Shawano, came through to pick up his first ever here at Seymour. Buhler held off Naeyaert to take the runner up finish with Naeyaert taking third. Naeyaert collected enough points to move into a tie for second place in the points with Terry Casey, only 11 behind leader, Troy Springborn. A.J. Diemel, Pete Parker and Troy Springborn rounded out the top six,

The IMCA Stock Cars took the track next with Chaz Van Ooyen grabbing the lead at the start followed by Jason Czarapata, Chad Wilcox, Brian Karcz and Shawn Kilgore. Czarapata moved inside Van Ooyen and for the next 5 laps ran door to door for the top spot. Czarapata finally pulled into the lead on lap 6 with Wilcox moving into the second spot 1 lap later and Kilgore, running the outside line, moved into third.

On lap k9, one of the wildest crashes ever took place on the back chute. Several cars got together out of turn 2 and when the dirt settled, Larry Karcz, Jr, was off the back chute on his roof, with the front end of Benji LaCrosse’ car on top of Karcz’. The back wheels were still on the high side of the track. The cars of Tim Van De Hei and Jesse Cullen were together in the middle of the track.

Of those involved, LaCrosse and Karcz had enough time to make quick repairs and rejoin the field before the restart.

Czarapata set the pace when racing resumed with Kilgore staying on the high side and working alongside, taking over the top spot on lap 12. John Heinz moved into third and Greg Gretz moved into fourth. As the field was coming in for the white flag, Kilgore took the flag and a bunch up out of the tri oval, brought out the caution, ending the race a lap early. Kilgore, picked up his second feature win in as many nights, after taking the main at the Door County Speedway Saturday night. Heinz took the second place finish with Czarapata taking third followed by point leader, Jeremy Christians, Wilcox and Benji LaCrosse in sixth.

Dave Hansen took charge of the Street Stock feature for the opening lap, before Darren Otto powered into the lead and started to pull away from the field. Jamie Van Ooyen, Charlie Van Ooyen, Bob White, Dean Kellner and Keith Kickbush set out after the leader. By the mid point of the race, Otto had things well in hand with Kellner moving into the runner up spot. Point leader, Mike Coel, moved into third with last weeks winner, Lance Arneson, fourth. Jamie and Charlie Van Ooyen were right behind.

Arneson lost a motor on lap 12, brining out the caution for the first time, which erased Otto’s huge lead. On the restart, Charlie Van Ooyen got wide out of the tri oval and into the front fence, keeping the caution out. Coel sprinted to the outside on the restart and after a couple laps, took over the lead. Coel held on to claim his first feature win of the year, which follows taking over the point lead after last week. Otto took the runner up spot with point contender, Jeff Treml taking third. Kickbush and Jeremy Wiitila round out the top six.

The Mods took the track next with Mike Broekman taking the lead followed by Jared Siefert, Russ Huxford, Art Siefert and Brian Mullen. Jared Siefert moved into the lead on lap 2 and started to pull away from the pack. Jay Schraufnagel, moved past Broekman for second and set out after the leader on lap 6. The race changed on lap 9 for an incident in turns one and two.

On the restart, Schraufnagel took over the top spot and one lap later, point leader, Brian Mullen found himself in third place. Schraufnagel proved why he has over 20 feature win this season, by pulling away over the final laps from Brian Mullen. Siefert held onto third to the finish with Scott Mullen taking fourth. Travis Spaulding was fifth and Huxford sixth.

The win for Schraufnagel was his fifth of the season here on Sunday nights.

The 4 Bangers closed the show and after several tries to get a lap in, spiced by a rollover, and several crashes, Dan Anderson took the lead and ran to his first win of the season.
