Shades Springborn for Seymour WISSOTA LM Win!
By Joe Verdegan |
June 2,
2002; Seymour, WI - Navarino veteran Terry Anvelink fought
off several late race pass attempts by defending champion Troy Springborn and hung on to
win his first 20 lap WISSOTA late model feature of the year at Seymour Tri-Oval Raceway
Sunday night. The event went green-to-checkered without a yellow.T
On the opening circuit Kaukauna's Pete Parker slipped underneath polesitter TJ
White to take the lead after White drifted high on the track. Anvelink charged from
seventh into second in just two laps. Anvelink began to chop away at Parker's four car
length lead with Anvelink catching up with Parker on lap eight. Anvelink passed Parker for
the lead one lap later coming out of turn two with Troy Springborn catching Parker and
passing him for second two laps later.
Springborn moved in on Anvelink, pulling door-to-door with the leader on lap 15, but
Anvelink kept his lead. Twice more in the final laps Springborn would pull door-to-door
with Anvelink but the Navarino driver was too tough. Anvelink skillfully threaded his way
through lapped traffic in the waning laps to score the win. Springborn settled for second,
followed by Parker, Tom Naeyaert and Terry Casey rounding out the top five finishers.
Luxemburg's Benji LaCrosse grabbed the lead on lap three and cruised to victory in a
caution-free 20 lap IMCA stock car feature. The win was LaCrosse's first of the season at
Seymour.
Chad Wilcox outraced Scott Karcz to the lead at the drop of the green. LaCrosse, who
started fourth, slipped underneath Karcz to grab the top spot on lap three. Greg Gretz
held the second spot with Chad Wilcox second. Shawn Kilgore, who started seventh, charged
through the pack to take third away from Wilcox on lap nine with John Heinz following him
through traffic.
LaCrosse kept the second through fifth place cars a safe three to four car length lead
distance throughout the contest. In the final five laps Shawn Wagner joined the quartet of
cars, weaving his awy into the third spot behind Gretz. LaCrosse maintained a three car
length lead over Gretz at the finish line. Gretz took second place money, followed by
Wagner, Heinz and Kilgore.
Oconto's Tom White took the lead at the drop of the green and went on to win his first 20
lap street stock feature of the season.
White faced a stiff challenge from Darci Czarapata throughout the contest. White and
Czarapata pulled away from the rest of the pack early and waded their way through lapped
cars in the final laps with White securing the victory. Czarapata took second place in her
best finish of the season. Placing third through fifth were Rick Naparella, Jeremy Witalla
and Mike Coel.
Iola's Mike Kempka bested the other 14 competitors to win the 12 lap 4 banger feature.
Coca Cola will present next Sunday night's races. All five divisions will be in action
beginning at 6:30 p.m.
